Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Default uNWANTED cONTENT

I - Limewire is good but I have some issues and want to know if they can be resolved

Iam not very computer savvy so please bear with me

I was downloading something which was titled one thing - for one reason or another I stopped downloading - and in the quality there was a break to show the download was interrupted upon doing another search -
i noticed a break on another file - i looked at the name of file and realised it was a name of something i would never download and disgusted me - so i did some research and noticed it was the same size etc as another file i had started to download which was nothing more then normal adult content according to title - even though i did not download and no harm was done - it worries me that I am downloading a file that I think is one thing and get another

Can this not be stopped - Is the material that is put on here not monitored - some of the titles i see on here are disgusting - how can they be allowed to be put on - and once they are put on can they not be taken off straight away - or worse come to worse can material not be checked so people know what hey are downloading is not something else

Is there no way these people can be clamped down on - cant authorities do something to stop people putting on - sorry to rant and rave

I have now done some research and blocked certain hosts and now blocked lots of keywords - but what worries me is that if these keywords are not in the title for example - something dodgy is under name scooby doo will it be discluded because of content relating to banned keyword

i just want to make sure nothing illegal is downloaded - is there anyway to guarantee this bar not using it - if so i guess that is only solution - but wanted to find out -

basically I want to know what I am downloading is OK - I don't want anything dodgy/obscene etc - I have banned hosts and keywords but am now ealising this may not be enough -

Is there anyway to ensure you don't get dodgy files - or is the only way to not use

cheers

That happened to me just a little differently. I was downloading something then at the end of the download i got the file i wanted, i went to Library to play it. As I was looking for it, there was porn all throught my saved files, I don't know why. I deleted all of it when i noticed.

Default P2P Network

mklessex & ducky101

Welcome to the world of P2P, I guess that you guys know that the network consist of thousands of PC users, just like you, and they put and share anything they want to on their PCs, and just like you, no one can stop or tell them what to do.

Remember, there is no central point that you download from and, by default, no central authority, you are at the mercy of whatever a P2P client (person and his PC) wants to share.

However, there is a "Bitzi" facility, which I have never used, within LW that can help to pinpoint what you are actually after. Perhaps one of the other forum members will explain how to use this.

Anyway, as I have already said, the internet is like the wild west and the P2P network is much more dangerous and not for the faint hearted, that's why it is such an exciting place because you never know what will turn up.

An interesting read is this by Leeware: Quality of Content on the Network (click on link) & I suppose also this Fake movies & why

It might be wise to look at the Sticky thread in the Upload/Downld Problems section.

(Whoops, just fixed up the 2nd link) lol

to me it is a bit sickening - don t get me wrong - i like normal adult content but i would never want anything sickening illegal etc -

i have checked dout bitzi and it works but i still have no trust in limewire now or any other p 2 p sharing - i dont understand it so is my own fault -

but personally the idea of not knowing what getting is scary - and digusting not exciting - so i think i will leave it there for limewire

i did write to them with feedback but got no reply

anyway happy searching

- bitzi - spoke to someone - you right click - go to advanced then bitzi -

i still don t understand why certain people can t be monitored or what they search for can t be monitored so if they are searching for something obscene - or people who download/upload certain obscene file names can t be monitorered

just seems to me that limewire is a mdium that can benefit the obscene which cannot be good - and not only that they can force it into your comp - i am lucky and as far as i knownothing bad was put on my comp - so i aint going to take the risk especially with videos in case someone does

lord of rings -

cheers for those links - they made very interesting reading - and made me realize how complicated this sharing is -

to be honest it has all taken me down the path of not using limewire for vodeos defo and thinking about music -

i stared on limewire to get some music and then when i saw there was adult movies downloaded some of those - but all i want was regular stuff and nothing obscene illegal etc - i have not got anything doodgy but all the messages etc i reeived have explained how easy it is for someone to mis represent a file and you dont know what u r downloading until u download it - this is scary uncomfortable and the idea sickens me - i got rid of keywords so would get normal adult content only - but now i realise that is not the problem becos any of these files could contain anything - so though i am filtering out the words i can t filter the content - so anyway my conclusion is just not to use(maybe music) - rather be safe then sorry

cheers for all the help -

i am still totally confused why certain files and users can t be monitored by authorities but hey ho - just being naive

Default Monitoring the Internet

Mklessex

I am guessing that you must be naive to want internet/P2P monitoring, just think about this for a moment:

1) They monitor the internet in China, everything (data, e-mails, pictures, etc.) on their system passes through a central point, it is then stored and kept for Government inspection. Do you honestly want something like that?

Monitoring and controlling information is used by totalitarian governments as a tool to keep the population under strict control.

2) The British Government, via the EC, is trying to introduce a system, similar to the Chinese, where every piece of data that passes through an ISP is recorded and kept for a year. Again, it is kept for a government organisation or official to inspect as and when they want to. Do you really want some faceless bureaucrat reading all your e-mails and deciding whether you, a friend or a relative are criminals based on the fact that something derogatory may have been written about the government of the day?

What you are suggesting will surely lead down the slippery slope to our governments monitoring everything on the internet, and they will not go after scammers, criminals or perverts they (our democratic governments) will use their new found controls as a means of monitoring and censorship.

I personally would rather download something objectionable that I can delete later than have the government monitor and read my e-mails.

Oh I fixed up my link for Fake movies & why. Whoops. lol

I'm sure you saw this one: Movie download issues & "IF" as you said you want to filter out adult content such as porn using keyword filters then the most effective can be found here: Weird results from searches (click on link) which if you see the link for "all" the most effective terms to add then you will effectively filter out the rubbish. Also, whilst you're downlding a video, use the Preview function to make sure you're getting what you're after. You'll need to downld at least 10% to be sure. Follow these principles & your experience at downlding videos shouldn't be so bad.

Default reply lord of rings

lord of rings -

your use of the word - "IF" puzzled me but i may just be misinterpreting

to be honest as i said b4 wanted download music - then noticed u could get adult content - and i thought got to be better then buying one at 20 thirty quid - was being naive at first and assumed it all be proper stuff -

so i did want adult content but normal stuff (if there is such a thing as normal porn) - u know women 18-50 etc nothing sick illegal etc doing nothing out of ordinary

i think now i have been lucky becos i have not got anything dodgy i believe but what worries me is the possibilities - i have done research last cuple days and got lots hlepful advice here and though i can probably be fine using advice and limewire - the whole experienc left bad taste and scares me off

I hav used keywords - but thre are no guarantees i am guessing of just getting what you want and that is enough to scare me off

i know i am prob being naive stupid immature and irrational about the matter but at least i have peace of mind - i mean th experience i have had so far is fine to my knowledge , it is the possibilities that worry me of viruses to unwanted contnt and i am just now realising the complexity and risks involvd hence scared off - sorry to rant rave and thanks everyone for help

- oh yeah i used the preview - but don t even want something 1% downloaded which is dodgy or has virus

cheers again

UK Bob I agree 100% and grant you much respect for what you just said. Sometimes the Government does not know it's own place.

However the NSA (National Security Administration) in America is already monitoring everything they want to with a big super computer but as I understand it's impossible to monitor every single peice of data that passes through cyberspace because the World Wide Web is just too damn mindboggingly big.
