Angry Codec Problem

Quick question about codecs alright I just downloaded a movie that says that it is a Movie File (Mpeg) and when i try to play it on DivX player and windows media player it says that it is not supported or it cannot find the codec. How do I fix this???

Also I was wondering if companies are starting to hide things in movie files so that they can share them easier

Hi,
I've been asking about the codex issue and either no one bothers to answer, or no one knows anything either. Very frustrating, since the forum is about our only form of troubleshooting and issue sharing.
I keep seeing the extension mov in the downloads and I'm afraid to select them for fear that I have nothing that will play them.
Since I started with LimeWire, I've paid for and downloaded several different burn and play programs. So far I have Nero, Roxio, QuickTime (which I can't get to work with anything), RealPlayer (which I thought would play movies, but can only get music,) Alcohol 120% and *******Viewer.
I did the free download of DVDShrink to work with Alcohol 120% so I could copy my DVD's to my computer in hopes of sharing it with other LW patrons. So far I get the movie to copy in chapters, one at a time. It plays back beautifully, but doesn't work for others to download.

Thank you Wondering Why,
I really appreciate the feedback. I did do a search for Codex and got codec and it gave me a good explanation of what it meant, plus I found several sites for downloading codecs if I start having problems. So far everything has played on one viewer or another.
What is a vlc player? If it'll play anything and do a good job of it, then that's the one I want. Which site do I go to? I'll do a search on Google by the initials. It usually brings up something on the subject I'm searching for.
Thanks again for the info. Do you copy store bought DVD's to your computer to share? If you do, can you tell me how it's done. I have DVDShrink, but the smallest I've gotten a movie file down to is 2 gigs and when I use Nero to copy it to my system, it copies it in individual chapters, which is no good either.
Maybe I'm asking no-no questions. If so, please let me know, so I don't cause issues for anyone.
One more thanks! Happy Movie Viewing!

Hi, You can find VLC media player site info in this forum, just type dvd players into search, I know theres a sticky on this subject posted by Lord of the Rings he's a senior on this forum and knows heaps. As for copying store dvds go to afterdawn.com and theres heaps of free software, I have dvd decrypter and dvd shrink and they work together well, but i havn't tried converting them into small files to share on lw as yet. I did download dvd santa and it converts all sorts of files, theres a free demo and its a full version for unlimited time, the only thing is it has demo across the top of the screen for about 2 mins, and then it goes, but its not to expensive for the proper version.Oh and VLC is free as well.

Hope this helps, best of luck

Rats! I just wrote an answer, then saw that I had clicked on New Thread instead of reply. I think it's time for me to go to bed. (It's 5 a.m. here)
Hey, thanks again for great info. I had just downloaded vlc from France (no sites in the States) and it went just fine. I picked all the audio and video file extensions I recognized from LW and my system. Hope I did right. I didn't pick .bin because I heard that's a big no-no for safety reasons.
Haven't tried it out yet, but I'm a bit too tired to function right now. I have so many players on my system now that I have a hard time chosing which to use.
I'll look up the other programs you mentioned too, see if any will help me out, or just confuse me more. They are all so alike and yet so different.
I guess we're all just learning all of this, though the masters know most.
Thank you again. I really appreciate the help.
