Default Spyware Perhaps

After just recently installing Limeware 4.9.30 I find it great, but I notice that every so often my Anti Spyware programme reports that it has automatically deleted Spyware from the registry.

Usually there are 2 found, the first being named KaZaA, and the other Grokster. Author Unknown - Source - Real Time

This has only started happening since the installation of Limewire!

Are those really Spyware or are they false positives, and should I always delete them?

It depends which Spyware program you're using. And NO LW does not have spyware. The problem is too many spyware programs out there don't work properly with p2p sharing programs. We recommend 1. Spybot - Search & Destroy (FREE), & also 2. ad-ware (FREE)

Some spyware programs out there are themselves spywares as reported on a spyware forum last year. And they made the point a great many more don't work properly. This recent thread might interest you: LOst everything to Spyware Scanner

I use a package supplied by my ISP that includes Anti Spyware/ Anti Virus/ Firewall/ Pop up Blocker etc so I would expect it to work well.

As I say it does report those as Spyware and that they were found in the registry, so can you tell me why they would be in the registry each time if they are not Spyware, and why would they be called Kazaa and Grokster when I don't use those p2p's?

I also update my spyware software every day.

Any ideas?

If you read the link I gave you, it would suggest that the spyware your isp uses doesn't work properly for p2p programs. The fact it identifies LW as totally different programs that work on totally different networks greatly suggests that it doesn't work properly. Someone who uses AOL complained of a similar situation yesterday. It seems the spyware that AOL special members use is not compatible with p2p software.

I can assure you, LW has been checked by independent sources (organisations) as being "totally" spyware & adware free! Perhaps your isp is not keen on p2p sharing. After all p2p uses great amounts of bandwidth & some isp's block or filter p2p because it slows down their networks.

Default A Small Point

Guys

A small point to make, though it may or may not be relevant. If Longroad PC is relatively new it may have been sold to him with pre-installed spyware.

I found pre-installed spyware on my current PC, which is a few days off its third birthday, which my anti-spyware apps failed to find. I was visually checking my "C" drive when found eight spyware items in all I then deleted them. Spybot, one of my anti-spyware apps, then found the registry entries for these items and deleted them also.

I guess, what I am saying that spyware can get onto your PC other than those that seem obvious to novices, methods such as being pre-installed, installing free or shareware apps, browsing web pages, fly by downloads, following unknown URL links, etc. Spyware writers, and some of them work for organised criminals, are constantly trying to find new ways of getting their rubbish onto your PC

LW Pro does not contain spyware or adware, LW Basic contains nagware, i.e. a pop-up that ask you to upgrade to Pro (this helps people who get their LW from scam sites who believe they were buying LW Pro). So apart from that LW and especially LW Pro is definitely clean.

I would suggest, as I previously did with another AOL user, that you ask AOL helpline to help you to configure their anti-spyware app to ignore LW. If they refuse then install Spybot, Adaware and MS Anti-Spyware, these apps are all free and together they will keep your PC spyware free.

Ok, should I uninstall Limewire and the Java that it installed and start again, and then allow those if it's picked up again as I really want to keep my current spyware programme.

Here is a list of the logs and please let me know if these should be allowed, the last 2, does that mean that I will have problems uninstalling Limewire?

KaZaA Registry hkey_local_machine \software\magnet Quarantine

Grokster Registry hkey_classes_root \magnet Quarantine

Application c:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall6_38.exe Delete

Limewire Application c:\Program Files\LimeWire\GenericWindowsUtils.dll Delete

Limewire Application c:\Program Files\LimeWire\WindowsV5PlusUtils.dll Delete
