Limewire pro

Is it legal to download music with the pro version?

stief October 22nd, 2005 03:06 PM

The Pro version, like the free, may only be used to share authorized music, like the files that have a license, ones from www.magnetmix.com, or ones you know can be legally shared.

The scam sites advertise "100% legal" and people are often mislead by that. The software is legal, many of the files are legal, but a legal car doesn't mean you have the legal right to drive over people crossing the highway ;)

If you were scammed into thinking otherwise, see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=28751

btw--don't think this is "legal" advice, and don't get your medical advice in a restaurant.

Legality of Downloads

As a lawyer, I offer you these weasel words:

It is no more illegal to download from LW Pro than from the regular version. It all depends on the license status of the file and can be a quite complicated question.

If a song is in the public domain, generally there's no problem but there may copyright issues for a particular artist's version. To insure legal downloads, when in doubt DON'T.

But if what you are really asking about is whether you might be the object of enforcement either by a govt unit or a music company, the odds would be very much in your favor.

You can check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_download which has useful information on the whole subject.

You can still get sued by the RIAA/MPAA if you download and sharemore than a thousand plus files.

So, no, it is not legal to download even if you pay for the program. Its illigal to download/upload copyrighted material of any kind, except porn, you can dl all the porn you want for free, they dont seem to be concerned about that. :rolleyes
