Default File management questions.

Hey all,

This is my first post and I am new to using LW. I hope I don’t cross post but I have a lot of questions, any help would be great.

When I do NOT have LimeWire open or active dose this mean People still have access to my files? I am wondering also if and how much this demands on your system.

File management questions.

1. Where is the best place to direct the uploaded files or dose it simply not matter?
2. For use with iPod can anyone tell me the best way to name a file, so it is recognized properly by I Tunes?
3. Is there a way to automatically compare what is on the network vs what you have in LW and or itunes music library’s? SO you don’t keep uploading multiples of the same song type of thing.

Bringing in files from LW to Itunes

I have read up as much as I can find regarding LW – to – Itunes, but like many new users I am confused about the best approach.

I am down loading song files from LW network in to a separate directory, I now want bring it into itunes and also have copy of it in my Itunes library. I cant seam to figure out how to this right. Ive read the thread ( How to download music to my iPod & itunes) but don’t get it.

I am manually putting all the song titles from the same artist into a folder after down loading.

Then to make sure I copy the files into itunes Library what do I do?? Do I use ( Add file to library ) or ( Add Folder to Library)

Then Finally to update my ipod and have those songs update under the same artist (If they are new added songs from an existing artist) I want them to be added to the artist as part of the existing artist. What is happening is the songs are being added as separate entries into the ipod. For example I now have 4 Def Leppard entries in my iPod?? Im really confused about this. Is there a setting in preferences I am missing?

Any help on this would really be appreciated.

1. Using default settings, LW will simply select your user-account. For windows that's generally C:\Documents and Settings\"your account name"\Shared, if you have win 98/me I "think" it might be C:\My Documents\Shared but I might be wrong. You can choose anywhere you like to downld the files to. The desktop or root level of the drive is not recommended as it can cause problems. Particularly if you get a virus or something & that would make it harder to contain & potentially do a lot more damage before you became aware.
Don't forget, for easy & quick access to your LW downlds: Go to your LW Library window, select Saved Files folder & press the Explore button. Sample image here: Using Library Explore button to access downld folder (click on link) And the folder will open for you. You can then drag & drop from there if you desire.

2. Get an id3 tagger to check the files before adding to iTunes. You could also use LW's describe function. But I would recommend an independent tagger. For mac OSX I would recommend Media Rage. For windows: http://massid3lib.sourceforge.net/ (which allows you to hover your cursor over the top to easily & quickly check the id3 tag is correct.) iTunes & iPod rely greatly on id3 tags. So double-check as suggested to make sure they're correct before adding. Not all songs have tags so you may need to add them 1st. Use ID3v2.2 ->2.4 for tagging. iTunes uses v2.2 for its own tagging. To tag within iTunes: select the song, go to menu bar, File>Get info. or keyb'd shortcut is control+i (mac is command+i)

3. Someone else might have better ideas about this question. I check the bit-rate & file-size. I may also see for any differences in id3 tag (that's what you see when you hover your cursor over the top of the song in the search results.)

I would recommend Add File to Library but select multiple files at once using the SHIFT key. If you're only downlding music, you can select the folder, drag & drop it into the Library icon on iTunes. That will add all songs within the folder. Of course there's other techniques.

BTW make sure iTunes is set to Copy to Library when adding. Go to iTunes preferences > Advanced>General & make sure that option is ticked.

Thanks LOTR,

2. I have music match jukebox on my system. Is this a good tagger? And will it work as you describe OR should I get or need the one you suggested. And dose this automatically add tags like when uploading a store bought cd into Itunes?

“I have the option copy to library when adding clicked”

Dose dragging and dropping from LW to Itunes make a copy of the file and add it to your actual Itunes library directory OR is it only acting as a pointer?

"...copy to library when adding..." will make a copy.

I don't know much about music match jukebox, but I have seen another moderator recommend it in the past. The idea of the tagger I was refering to is, files on your desktop you can quickly scan just by putting your cursor over the top to see if their id3 tags are correct. Comparable in the same way you can do this in LW when the search results come in with LW's abilities for id3 tag detection. There's some good taggers out there & I don't know all of them. I'm sure jukebox does a fine job.

I can't answer the last part of Q.2
