Internet account usage

Hey guys, I am in Oz and have an cable internet connection with which is an unlimited usage contract, the other day I recived an email from my IP saying I have reached 8gb and they will throttle my connection at 10gb, the thing is I know Ive been downloading a few things especially avi files but no more than I thought from previous months, so I rang them and they said that if people upload from me that can effect my usage, I have noticed that alot of people upload from me all the time (10-15 at one time) should I stop sharing for now? as its only the beginning of the month and I just checked my usage meter and its now on 9573.91mb.

Thanks for your time....

ISP and their use of the English Language

Wondering why

You are not the only one that ISPs have arbitrarily redefined what certain words mean, this happens world wide not just is OZ.

For example:

Unlimited - means limited to what we tell you you can do.

24/7 - usually means 150 hours a month.

So, you have a couple of choices to make:

1) You can get yourself another ISP, I don't know what the ISP situation is like in OZ but here in London we have new telecoms/ISPs always popping up and competing on price a broadband speed.

2) Throttle back on your usage of the P2P network, as told to do by your ISP. Bearing in mind that after saying that you had unlimited usage you are now being rationed without any reduction in your monthly subscription.

I certainly know which choice I would make.

Hey bobby, I cant get out of my 2yr contract, and you are right in saying that they failed to mention that unlimited had limits but telstra in oz sucks, its going to come down to getting a lawyer to check your simple contracts, phone, net , pay tv, its getting crazy, Im on LW at the moment, downloading about 6 avi files, it was running at 200kb plus but I just checked its now running at 2 and 3kb lol I dont care if it takes 3 days their not going to stop me doing what I enjoy after all I pay top dollar for their crap lol :D

Ill probably catch you all next month lol:D

I don't have cable. I use broadband (bottom level lol :D) but I do get unlimited downlds. If I choose dsl 2 the new hi-speed here, then it's all capped downlds which simply wouldn't suit me (eg: 8 or 16 GB/mth.) Even though the speeds are 10 + times faster, I already downld more than the downld limits for dsl offer before I'd be throttled down. Unless I get a business price service which is still limited. (My speed is 256 kbps)

I'd have to say, 8 GB is extremely small for cable or any high speed service. I at least double that/mth. I guess I'd query is that up/down combined or just downld? And is off-peak counted? Some services don't include some things in the total. Such as off-peak, or downlds from certain accepted sites for softw & videos, etc.

I just got off the phone to them, I told them their **** because they dont tell you this in their fancy freakin adds, he tried to pass the buck off to billing and suggested I have a good spyware program. They have informed me that I have been shaped to 64kpbs which is dial up speed and Im only 12 days into the month, Ive checked LW, Ive lost one of my ultrapeers and now lost my hosts that I was downloading off. Oh well LW cold turkey for the rest of the month lol :p

Ill play in the forum instead lol:D

LOTR to answer you, thats up and download, do you think all the uploading makes a big difference?

Lord of the Rings November 12th, 2005 05:14 AM

I can't remember Telstra's policy on uploading but it might yes. In future you may need to cut back on Uploads (speed) to make it fairer on yourself. Perhaps limit slots also. I do, but I only have a very slow upld capacity. So I need a little to browse at the same time. lol :D

Are you in Oz as well ?
I had my slots set at 20, Ive cut that to 10 now and is the bandwidth the slide meter, if it is its all the way up and where should I set that?

thanks for taking the time to help;)

Lord of the Rings November 12th, 2005 05:44 AM

That depends upon what your upload capacity is. I'm from the garden state ;)
