name change hi there i am new to this! in the monitor tab i can see all the people connecting to me. how do change my name?? or at least see what my name would be appearing as in everyone else's monitor tabs!! thanks |

Your own name, or rather ip does not show up on your own machine, ... (I think that's what you are driving at). It is possible to see your own share, usually, by going to direct connect on the search page and searching your own ip ... you will see it when you get there. Unless you have some sorts of firewall set up, you should see your search in the search window. You may need to try more than once. I hope I understood your question and this helps. |

Name Changing Natasha As far as I can tell, you cannot change what your name is or what other P2P sharers see you as on the Monitor tab. However, people cannot see your real name. i.e Natasha, all they see is your IP address. UK Bob |

Other people would simply see your ip. On odd occasions it might show isp but that's not usually the case in the monitor window, but rather the connections window (& that's only if you're an ultrapeer.) Your ip if it doesn't show under the direct connect search window is http://www.whatismyip.com/

yup, natasha, i just joined the forum in search of an answer to this very question. i am on a mac using limewire and also itunes 6. in the "shared music" window in itunes, i see the real names of everyone on my network who is using limewire, e.g.: "john doe's limewire tunes." must be six or eight of these folks. needless to say, i too am interested in changing my name so that it doesn't appear all over the network, but am novice enough that i haven't figured out how to do so yet. any ideas? cheers, |

Whoah slow down a bit here! lol iTunes is a totally different kettle of fish. With iTunes, it will share playlists across a lan or wan. So if you are connected to a lan then you might see other people's iTunes playlists. That happens with our set up here (& some complaints from my partner lol ) So for OSX, you really don't need to share your iTunes. In iTunes preferences, you'll see an option to share your iTunes music. Also within LW, preferences (command & comma), iTunes>Sharing you also have an option to share your LW playlist such as with iTunes & others using iTunes on a LAN/WAN. Since auto-importing of songs is available for LW -> iTunes on a mac, I'm not sure why you'd want to use either of the share options within iTunes or LW. By doing so, you're allowing others on the LAN/WAN play your playlist & see others iTunes playlists. Of course, you can play their songs from their playlists, but can't copy them (& vice versa.) Unless you want to see their playlists &/or them to see your playlists.

Network Connection Splashncough Being connected to a network is slightly different to be connected to the Internet, on a network you can see other peoples names and connections. On the internet, usually, peoples IDs and their computer names are protected from exposure by a firewall. If a user does not have a firewall then it is possible to find out their computer name and, possibly, anything else on their hard drive. I presume that you are either on an office or college network, either way networks primarily connect PCs together so that they can share information in your particular environment. Whereas the internet is about collecting information for yourself. UK Bob |
