Crash on Startup

Hi, I'm not sure where this thread should go, since my problem occurs after installing, but before connecting. If there is a better place for this thread, please feel free to move it.

Onto the problem. I am currently running a Windows XP SP2 on compaq presario x1000 laptop with a radeon 9200 and Pentium M. I have successfully installed Limewire, but when I go to start it, it gets to the splash screen, with the lime, and then it just dissapears. The splash screen is only there for a very short amount of time, and I have tried the java re-installation. I am using 4.9.37 but it didn't work on previous versions either.

Any help would be appreciated, and if you need more information just tell me.

Try these things:

1. Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 in Fixes for Limewire (sample at bottom of page.)

2. Reinstall LW using the "Offline" installer: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml

3. If still no good, uninstall Java & instead, install Java 1.4.2 "offline" version (see point #1 in the link in suggestion "1".

If still no good, tell us what graphic card brand & model you have.

Ok, so I've tried everything listed here. Still, the same error occurs.

I am using Radeon 9200 Mobility, and compaq Presario x1000 laptop.

Have you by any chance been infected with a previous virus and or spyware? Usually when Limewire actsup that could also mean their might be a hidden trojan on your system. If you have an AV run a complete scan and see if that helps. Have you scanned/ defragged your computer lately? SP2 service pack has settings you will need to adjust in order to allow it to let Limewire startup and run.

About the defragging, I have my computer on auto defrag every month. I don't want to do it too often because it kills the harddrive. So yes, I have defragged recently. On the SP2 requirements, please elaborate, but if you mean allowing it through the firewall, I've already done that. Don't get me wrong, its only the newer versions that I'm having troubles with. pre-4.4 it worked quite well. I havn't thought of the possibility of a trojan, so I'll let my av's run tonight and post results in the morn.

yes, run your AV. See if that helps clear it up. If all else fails try to reset your Limewire settings back to default under tools/options.

I can't GET to tools/options. My limewire doesn't even boot up. The splash screen where it says "Loading" just pops up. Then, it chokes, then shuts down limewire. The whole thing happens in less than a second. Thanks anyways tho.

ok I see then that def sounds like you got a hidden trojan somewhere on your system.

Nothing. I used lavasoft ad aware and norton antivirus but nothing came up in either.
