Question Problems with video preview or launch

Hi,
seem to have developed a problem with my LW in the video library previewing or launching a video.(music is no problem). If I attempt to launch a video one of three things could happen.

1/ Nothing happens (thats the good outcome)
2/ LW shuts down
3/ Whole computer shuts down and restarts.

Options 2 & 3 are more likely to occur if I double click or on the third attempt.

Up until a few days ago everything worked fine.

Coincedently, a problem that is I suspect is linked has occured when launching video or music from my shared file direct. When I double click or left click-open the following error message occurs

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel."

If I left click-play it works fine. I have been to the control panel-folder options area and could not sort it out. That is probably because I have very little idea of what I am doing. I am using Windows XP and have plenty of available memory 56GB.

Hope U can help

Sounds like a codec issue in part, but not sure why your system would restart. Perhaps a graphic card problem (out of date drivers.)

I'd recommend VLC - (click on link) _ (choose nearest mirror site) for previewing as it has it's own built-in codecs & is generally very reliable. To see it's abilities, see http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html

Check for updates for your graphic card drivers. OR/And for any other drivers for your computer. That's generally what causes auto-reboots. Are you getting the dreaded Blue Screen of Death (BSD) just before the computer reboots? If not, it could be a bad ram chip, or overheating. Perhaps an inefficient fan or inefficient heat-sink.

Unhappy Thanks, will have a go

Hi,
thanks for the prompt reply. Everything was fine until a week ago but I will check out the drives. As I mentioned in the initial message it would only reboot some of the time. On other occasions only LW would shut down.
Any thoughts on the error message from my sgared file when I try to launch from there?
In the mean time I am currently downloading VLC.

Regards
Kevro

Sounds like you don't have a default for the file(s) in question. VLC will ask to become the default when you install it. Otherwise you can get hints here Setting Default video app

I'm not sure why that should be the case though. Unless something has corrupted your system settings for file types & their linkage/correspondence to particular programs.

Smile One down,one to go

Thanks Mr Rings,
That has sorted out the problem with the shared file. Alas the LW problem is still there all be it a little more stable than previously reported. I has'nt been rebooting but LW is still shutting down if I persist in trying to preview or launch a video in the library or download section. All my drivers are fine. as mentioned b4 its only the video, music is 100% running.

Regards
Kevro

PS No Blue Screen that you mentioned earlier.
