the autocomplete opens in a drop down box under the search, that much i know. i do not want to delete it, i want to use it. i just haven't been able to figure it out. so i still need answers.

Only a Hobo answered your question when he said

If you do a search for something Limewire remembers it so next time you type it into search it remembers and auto completes it.
In other words auto complete will only work if you have typed in exactly the same word previously during that limewire session!

eg. if you type 'I want Limewire' and do a search but find no results. next time all you have to do is hit the 'I' key and in the box below 'I want Limewire' will appear!

You have 3 options. Type in the 1st one or few characters of a previous search & autocomplete will fill the rest. Or clear it. Or not use autocomplete. In the example below, you can choose option 2 which is autocomplete. Else choose option 1 which is manual input. Option 3 is clear previous search history which can be handy if you've had a lot of similar varied searches that start with the same letters. Or you simply want to remove previous autocomplete history.

I also like using autocomplete. If you want to vary the search title, then change the part you wish & autocomplete will also remember that. So as soon as you reach that part of the search title in the next search it will also be auto-completed.

As Only A Hobo was refering to, on the older versions, you only had one option. You either had autocomplete enabled or didn't. ie: via LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>View>Autocomplete.
