Default files unavailable

Often when doing a search for files they come up but are not available. Could someone explain this to me as I thought that if a file came up during a search then the machine it is coming from is switched on and should be available. For example the movie Brokeback Mountian comes up (multiple instances) but none are available, how does this happen?
