Bitrate??

At the risk of sounding incredibly stooopid...What is bitrate?

Why are files with a higher 'bitrate' bigger(13000kb) than those with a smaller 'bitrate'(6000kb)?

Any help is much appreciated. Just a newbie trying to learn.
