Default codec

I have downloaded a couple of movies and before transferring to dvd I tried them on wmp but got codec errors. I checked forum and someone advised downloading vlc from download.com as it was free but when I tried it was going to cost nearly $19. anyone got othher advice that is not going to cost me. thanks.

See here for links to codecs & also VLC. I always thought it was free! Follow 6_pac's links:

I would have rec. WMP for video transfers. Download the XP codecs and you'll be able to play everything in WMP. You might need to move the files from your shared folder, make some folders on your desk top in your c: drive in Windows and copy/paste the videos into them for easy listening, uploading and burning, you can always move them back into your shared folder afterwords.

Default copied dvds

thanks sphinx, I have since found a system on my computer which comes with the dvd writer and was able to copy onto dvd. unfortunately they only play on computer not in dvd player.
any ideas what I am doing wrong and how I can put this right. by the way I also don't know if it's just me but wmp does not seem to recogonise that I have a dvd writer but it seems to think its only a cd-rw and dvd player.

You need to have a burning program....This software will convert and then burn the file...
Many people recommend Nero, but personally I use the dvdsanta, there is a free demo version which is fully functional and has no time limits, you just get a demo message at the top of the screen,( but zooming in will make it dissapear)....
This is the link

It is very easy to use as well....
