Default Monopolizing bandwidth??

Hi,

I've been using limewire for years and I have had this problem for a while.

For some reason Limewire seems to monopolize my entire network connection. I'm on the latest limewire on mac os 10.4.3. I have a dsl router getting between 3 and 5 mb/s connected to an apple airport wireless base station.

Somehow when I am downloading several downloads, with download speed capped at 100kb/s, and getting speeds well below the 300kb/s I routinely get on my dsl, I can't connect to the internet on other applications.

When this happens I usually have several files "connecting..." or "waiting in line" or some other message. So a total of perhaps 10-20 files in the download window.

However in using a network utility I see no more than 100kb/s down and like 7kb/s upload on my network.

So why is Limewire plugging up my internet?

So it's almost like limewire is making the size of my pipe smaller. Or monopolizing it.

And I will note that I am not having many uploads. By this I mean that uploads are not plugging up the bandwidth.

I do have a firewall installed (the OS firewall).

Do this test: Bug Report instructions & sample image Is the result True/False?

If false then see the UPnP section of this post: Connection problems? Check here first! (click on link)

You may need to reduce upload & downld bandwidth slightly. Also, it might be worth disbling ultrapeer abilities under the Speed options of your LW preferences.

I would also recommend not using the Resume/Find Sources function on all your incompletes simultaneously or this will definitely hog your bandwidth & use up a lot of LW's & your computer's resources.

OK thanks for the response. I noticed you gave much the same response as to another poster who had a similar problem.

When I view bug report, it does say "False" no connections received. However, this is while I have 4 uploads in the monitor window. I don't particularly care about the firewall inhibiting uploads. I don't see how it relates to my problem.

I will give a more concrete example of what I'm experiencing.

I currently have limewire open, and it has been on for like two hours+. I have three connections as usual in the connections tab.

I am downloading 7 files @ 80 kb/s or so +-. I am uploading 4 files at 3kb/s. I have two other files that "need more sources."

This adds to 84kb/s, however i have a very hard time now connecting to the internet even to send this message. I can't get any data to transmit somehow. Shutting down limewire instantly solves this problem.

This is not a problem with my set up. My bandwidth is only 84kb/s, and this is confirmed by my network monitor.

So something is happening with limewire that is messing with my router/connection.

I have tried reducing upload/download bandwith. This doesn't seem to do anything. And as long as my bandwidth is low in the downloads section (and on my monitor), then that shouldn't be the problem.

My ultrapeer capabilities are disabled.

Is limewire doing something behind the scenes that I can play with? I have the feeling that there is some malfunction with limewire. Does anyone know what this might be?

No one has any ideas?

I did a little more testing, and I think that on anothe rmachine on the same wireless network I can also not connect to the internet, except to run limewire on that computer. Not positive about this.

Hi there, thanks for the help.

The DSL router is a "speedstream" one supplied by my ISP. It is only 6 months old or so. I don't know what a network adapter is. I have the router connected via ethernet to the airport base station (it's an older base station -- this is what apple calls its wifi router).

I have done speed tests via my ISP (they have one through dslreports.com). With limewire running in the background with 50kb/s down and 5kb/s up, I get 420kb/s down and 36kb/s up.

So it's between 3 and 5 mb dsl. It's supposed to be 3mb dsl but I seem to have a good connection to the ISP.

I'm sure you don't. LW does have an ability to get thru some firewalls using a 'Push Force' ability but many won't get thru. Good luck with your little issue anyway.

I don't know what your problem is, lord? I do care if others can share my files, but that is not my problem now. Once this issue is resolved I can work on other ones. I realize that you perhaps want more people to share, however this is not that issue.

I still have not resolved this issue.

I have the feeling that it is with certain file messages that it happens:

I am narrowing it down to "connecting..." (when this message is up there for a while with specific files -- sometimes it is up there for many minutes).

Or perhaps when files are queued "waiting in line position..."

I have the feeling others have this problem. Perhaps my downloading of multiple files at once is causing problems, however even downloading only a few files gives this result.

Has anyone else had this issue??

I'm not sure about your Speedstream model, but your apple basestation will have a NAT firewall. Did you check the link I gave to enable UPnP on it (apple calls it NAT-PMP.) Also if you have OSX firewall active, did you configure it to allow LW full access. Get these issues out of the way 1st & perhaps we can narrow down the problem ... or perhaps the firewall issue is related to your problem. Check the 2nd link I gave in my 1st post.

If you use the resume/find sources function on all your files simultaneously then this can put pressure on LW's resources & your computer's resources if there's many incomplete files.

I would also recommend updating to Java 1.5 & forcing LW to use Java 1.5; http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301073
That's update release 1 but there's also Java 1.5 release 3. Java 1.5 will improve LW's performance.

thanks I will look at these. However I do think that it's simply some error on Limewire's part. Certain methods of communicating eat up the bandwidth (but don't show that they're eating it up). I think this may be the case for "Connecting...."

I have the feeling that others have this issue also, but perhaps haven't realized it yet? Most people don't use limwire and other online services at the same time? Or they don't download multiple files at once?

If you resume files, how much bandwidth is that eating up, when it says "Waiting for sources...?" It is supposedly nothing, but for some reason this seems to add to the block and plug up my pipe.
