Getting crappy search results and virus's. Very dissapointed. Hi all, I have Limewire Pro and have been using it here and there, but Ive noticed Ive been getting really lousy and shitty results. Most of everything I search for results in trojan files popping up. They are mostly all 851.7kb in size, or 197.7 files which Im sure Im not the ONLY person who retrieves these type of file sizes claiming to be the program, music file or application you would be seeking. Now I know if Im looking for, for instance, a game or movie, I know the ACTUAL file is going to be larger than 851.7kb. I know the 851.7 files are trojans because I accidentely downloaded one, but my virus program picked it up and advised me what they were. In my final results i may pick up 1-5 good results that seem to be files in the mb fields, but most of my results are in a result of small tiny kb files. So I suppose my question is, is there clients or hubs or servers we can connect to, to get much better results in searches? Im not sure how much Im paying, but I subscribed to the pro version as it was told to me that Pro gives you much better results than the basic version, but Im very dissapointed in learning that this may be false advertisement. Can someone enlighten me with how to configure my Limewire Pro to search for better results and less virus pickup results??? PLEASE Last edited by Doctorwho; April 2nd, 2006 at 10:41 AM. |

First--go to the LW's About Box and see what version you are using. It should show version numbers of the OS, Pro, and Java. If you can't find the About box, the Options->Bug Report->Sample Bug Report gives the same info in the first few lines. |

Its version 4.10.0 and Java version 1.5.0 Windows Im using is 2000 (if this helps) But yah, theres something for sure wrong, because I did a search for just the word, WINDOWS and usually in programs like DC++, Morpheus, Napster, etc you would get a HUUUUGE search results back by just that word, especially if your searching for ALL results, but my results for LW were all KB files. No MB files at all, and most of them were all the 851.7 trojan virus files that came up again. I know I dont have any virus's or firewall thats causing this to happen because I just recently reformatted my computer, so its practically a brand new OS system Im using. Im running Kaspersky virus scan and adaware pro and popup blocker pro, but I doubt these programs would effect my results while they are protecting me from internet attacks. It doesn't say 4.10.0 Pro?????? Ooops--that usually indicates a spammer version of LW. The legitimate LimeWire Pro is 18.88; and the Basic is FREE. If you paid for one of those "LifeTime Memberships" (or whatever phrase the spammers are using to repackage the Free Basic LimeWire), see the thread about getting your money back. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=28751 |

Tips: Ignore files less than 2 MB (2,000 KB) in size. Yes there is pollution on the network due to companies like Overpeer who are sponsored by companies like mpia & riaa & others. The best way to deal with it is ignore it & filter it out. Use the junk filter when you see such results less than 2 MB in size. The Junk filter is a dynamic learning filter so it takes time for it to learn what to filter out. But once calibrated, it's very, very effective!!! For a clue about which ones, see 1. WARNING: Viruses on network you should be aware of! (click on link) 2. autogenerated spam results 3. autogenerated mp3 spam results 4. Sponsored Results (click on link) 5. For instance, I did a search for the word, REGISTRY, because Id like to see if theres a copy of Registry Cleaner. Only 2 files that looked legit came up. Rest of my results were over 80 files that were all the same size. Either 891.7 or 197.7 which are the trojan files or spamming files that come up. I went to DC++ which is my other p2p network I use. I typed in Registry and up came 865 results and only 80 of the files looked like bad or virus files. I mean, damn. If this is the results that PRO gives you, Id HATE to see what the basic free copy gives you in results. Probably all but just virus files and trojans with trick names to fool people with. No offense, but that would be false advertisement on LW's main site, stating that PRO gives you better results. It does in a way which isnt a lie, but instead gives you MORE results in VIRUS'S and crappy results. I think what people want is a search engine that gives BETTER RESULTS as in good results that they would normally find on Morpheus, DC, and Napster. Not a search that brings up over 100 files that are all KB in size and virus's. I only like using LW better than DC because my friend said it provides better speeds and your uploading from people who have the same file or if others have the same result file(s) you are trying to get, then the faster the upload time. On DC, you have to actually wait for that individual to free up a slot you can use and the upload speed is based on yours and his bandwidth. Oh well, guess Ill just go back to using DC++. :-( |

The Gnutella network is full of a lot of trash, because it's an open network where anyone can distribute any kind of file. As a result, if you insist on using LimeWire, you must definately avoid the filesizes of 851.7kb, 69.4kb, or 0kb. These are the filesizes of commonly distributed viruses on the Gnutella network. In addition, you must also keep in touch with other limewire users in order to be up to date on all the new viruses that have invaded the network. But yeah, go on and keep using limewire. |
