Limewire Allows Access to Home PC A friend's sixth-grade daughter has been using Limewire to share music online. Recently, the PC slowed to a crawl. During the process of removing a significant amount of malware, I determined that the young lady was using Limewire. In the Limewire folders, I found over 9,000 pornographic movies. It appears that Limewire is granting access to others to use the PC in a file sharing environment as storage for uploading and downloading unwanted files. Besides removing Limewire from the system, is there some way to configure Limewire to not allow access to the PC from unwanted users? What security measures should be taken to keep this from happening again? Thanks! |
Most likely they were not pornographic files did they all happen to be 8651.7kb in size. There is a virus that will remake itself 1000's of times running around on the Gnutella net. It is most likely that she opened one of these files and it started duplicating itself. You will find this virus in almost any software search you do on the gnutella net. This file renames itself then duplicates. The link below should be of some help. Also this virus disables most anti virus software. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=41432 |

This really wasn't explained clearly, so I'll elaborate. The Gnutella network is full of a lot of trash, because it's an open network where anyone can distribute any kind of file. As a result, if you insist on using LimeWire, you must definately avoid the filesizes of 851.7kb, 69.4kb, or 0kb. These are the filesizes of commonly distributed viruses on the Gnutella network. In addition, you must also keep in touch with other limewire users in order to be up to date on all the new viruses that have invaded the network. But yeah, go on and keep using limewire. |
Well there's no need to double-post Forum Rules (click here) so if you don't like LW or gnutella fine, drop it & run. Enjoy your DC. I used 3 mac DC's & 3-4 pc win DC- ++'s ... they not perfect either. Just wait till Overpeers catch up with them also. lol :D Are you a member of a private or public hubs? Public hubs on dc are full of crap, ddos'ers, FBI, people searching for what they know not, I do not wish to list the rest for fear of appearing to insult them. But DC can be very good. BTW DC++ is a type of program that runs on that network, not what the network is called. Have you ever used DC or any of the other clients. There's better than DC++ as I found out from trying another & then getting to meet & knowing one of the proggies. I wouldn't be one of their private beta testers otherwise. Run .. run far .. over the hills & far away... over the mountains wide ... till you learn more ...  |
Who said anything about DC++? |
Delete your post ... ok whatever! :D I've got better things to do. But yes, gnutella like most networks has problems. You just need to learn the simplicities to overcome the ones that are thrown onto gnutella. eg: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...light=overpeer |
