What is the number that is labled "You are sharing (some number) files"?

That is the no. of files you are sharing. Check your Library window to see which folders you are sharing. You might also be sharing partial downlds which is good for everyone on the network!!! See How to Share Folders (click on link)

I thought I turned off sharing in the preferences? I am still geting numbers.

I found the way to turn off uploads. For anyone intrested: go to your preferences, go to sharing (try unchecking the finished downloads box), and click the address in the to box. Then select the folders and hit remove.
