UK Bob Even if you have chat enabled you don't have to use it. If it makes you easier to browse then you should. Then to the freeloading issue. Limewire will be able to download torrents when next major version is released. My worry is that this will make the leeching (freeloading) even worse. I have started a thread about the issue and your views would be appriciated. BTW LOTR says that the developers sometimes look at the forum where it's posted. "I use a firewall (NPF 2005) to protect my PC from attack and, I understand, that this could prevent my shared files from being browsed but it does not prevent people from downloading files from me." Where did you get this idea from? Browsing a host works exactly the same as any other file transfer. If you do not disable browsing and people can download from you, they can browse you as well. |

Hi Hyper-kun I got the idea from other members of this forum, that is why I wrote "I understand" rather than "I know for a fact". Reading from other more technical savvy people on this forum, such as LOTR, I understand (and possibly believe) that it may not be possible to browse someone if they are behind a firewall. However, if you know that this is untrue then I welcome your input, as this will add to the forum’s knowledgebase, all I ask is that you provide some evidentiary proof. UK Bob |

Before being properly configured I had files uploaded from me that I made myself. I would guess that was from browsing since I was at the time downloading similar files. Off course I have no way of knowing for sure if the download started from being browsed or it came up in a search. BTW one file was not rated at Bitzi so no magnetlink |

Browse Test Well there still seems to be a fair bit of confusion about who is sharing. Are we experiencing a bad connection due to the web, LW or p2p in general? Or are most peeps just selfish & greedy? Or are we being banned? I really don't think most problems come from being banned. I banned a few when i started posting on this thread and when they tried to finnish those incomplete files i saw in the monitor window status column (banned for being greedy) i imagine they saw the same thing in their dl window has anyone seen this in their dl window before? I have since lifted the ban (i will only ban hosts who have alot of viruses they keep and share) as i am convinced that the problems are more to do with connections than selfish greed. I propose a browse test i am going to stay connected for about 7 more hours i am set up to allow chat i am not really available for chat but it is supposed to improve your chances of browse i have also enabled ultrapeer. I have renamed a mp3 bbrroowwssee try a search for this if you find it start a dl then try to browse me, i will then try to browse you and we can post our results here and check for consistency & failures First you need to go tools/options/chat and check enable chat then tools/options/uploads/ and uncheck allow partial sharing. And as soon as you have completed the dl of the bbrroowwssee file drag it out of your library then go back to your library highlight and delete that file. This should answer alot of our questions while we may learn that though we think we are allowing browse we really are not or maybe not for everyone. Which could make us appear selfish. Hope you guys give it a go. We might find some nice tunes while were at it Peace Last edited by Deepend; July 18th, 2006 at 09:39 AM. |

I don't know how many bugs LimeWire has. LimeWire's support for host browsing is very crappy. It is not even remotely HTTP conformant. Most-likely LimeWire does not even attempt host browsing using it's very own RUDP protocol even though that works perfectly fine. I don't have to prove anything, especially not the obvious. Very few people understand what a "firewall" really is which is very obvious by reading the comments here. For most people a firewall is a magic or mysthic device. Again, if people can download files from you - no matter how - they can browse you as well (unless you explicitely disable this in your LimeWire settings). As said, whether LimeWire can actually do that or whether it's too buggy isn't the question. It's technically easily possible and every LimeWire or Gnutella developer will confirm that. Since you don't believe me anyway, I'll end the discussion here. |

How do I know? That's true but, how do I know who is downloading from me? I dont mind in sharing all I have but I dont know who is who. Plus could anybody tell me how do I find a user?
