Red face Can't do windows updates...........

Hi again, smee again I have been trying to do some "windows updates" and they download, but then they won't install, because it says I don't have a "genuine" version of Win XP, which could very well be right

Is there anything I can do? as don't they say that your PC is more vulnerable without the updates?
thanks a lot,
Neddy

Nedswife

You have got to be the biggest (and latest) of the jokers to hit this forum.

If you have a "hooky" copy of windows XP then for goodness sake get a legitamate copy asap because MS could get FAST (Federation Against Copyright Theft) to pay you a visit. Now that you have tried to update your XP MS now has your IP address in their computers and can trace you via your ISP.

I know of a similar character who borrowed an already registered copy of a MS product and tried to re-register it online, FAST paid him a visit and seized his computer.

Now that Vista is on the verge or being released copies of XP (even ex-student copies) are now very cheap.

So get yourself a cheap legitamate copy of XP asap.

Angry not real windows xp

Do you realize how many false hits they get with thier junk authentication program? If they sent people out to every house that failed that program they would have a massive law suite on their hands. And i wouldnt hold my breath on windows vista.

Just get a legit copy ASAP - follow Microsoft's instructions when it says you don't have a genuine copy, and it will give you a link to register for a genuine copy.

Without it, you can't get critical security updates or service packs.

Dog Meat (I still love that name)

You may be right when you say that MS will probably not send out people to raid you but why take the chance when you know they have your IP address, especially as they have raided people with hooky MS products before.

The simplest thing to do is take Nobie's advice and get that MS authenticated copy of XP or find a store willing to sell a cheap, cheerful and legitamate copy, any other course of action is just asking for trouble.

Thanks to all who took the time to answer my questions, much appreciated.

I used to have a "hooky" version of the previous program, and it did updates fine. So I didn't understand why it wouldn't update.

UKBOBBOY, if FAST prob ISN'T going to pay me a visit, would that mean that I am not, in actual fact the BIGGEST AND LATEST Joker on the forum?

PPL like me come to these forums because we DON'T KNOW ANYTHING, and sometimes we are a bit embarassed about the simple questions we ask, without ppl like you making making us feel worse. YOU were a beginner once too!

A simple reply to my question would have been adequate, without the insult. If you can't say something nice about somebody, don't say anything at all.

Thanks,
Neddy

try disabling your firewall and starting up the windoze firewall and see what happens...I've had this happen twice (errmmm...at least on two installs repeatedly) and this worked for me..of course since I couldn't find the root of the problem the real solution was to reformat and reinstall XP...
