Virtual memory too low?????????????

Hi guys... I just got this message and wanted to know if it has anything to do with LW or if it affects in any way the program's performance. The message said: Windows Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low. Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of you virtual memory paging file. During this process, memory request for some applications may be denied. I have no idea what this is or what caused it. I was just burning a downloaded via LW video file wth Nero Vision 4 and after that message showed up the cd tray didn't even want to open. Sorry if it's a silly question. I'm sort of new to computers and also excuse me if this post does not belong here. Help. Thanks.

When I convert or burn with Nero I don't run anything else. Unless you have a really fast PC with a lot of RAM Nero will be using all resources. If you bring up TaskManager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) you'll probably see your CPU running at 100% when using it.

You can set priority in Nero to low but it really effects the speed

Windows Virtual Memory

Virtual memory on a windows PC is a chunk of space on your HD that windows uses as an extension to its normal ram memory.

Usually, when you run out of virtual memory (the space in MB that windows reserves for use) it is because you are either running several programs at the same time, your PC has been on a long time (usually your screen saver would have started) and or the space reserved on your HD is too small.

Before I move on I must advise you that whenever your are burning CDs or DVDs make sure that no other application is running at the same time.

You will see from my attached jpg that my office PC has its virtual memory set between 384 to 768 MB but for optimal performance you should set your PC to “System Manage Size”.

You can get to this virtual memory controls by clicking on the following:

(Right Click Mouse) My Computer > Properties > Advance Tab > Performance Advance Button.

Note, that depending on whether you have Win XP Home or Pro with SP1 or SP2, the buttons and facilities you see will defer. However, the user setting for “Virtual Memory” is there under “My Computer”.

Hope this helps.

UK Bob

PS. Remember to reboot your PC whenever you change your virtual memory setting or if you run out and don't want to make any changes.

I set mine higher than that.

Hmm, I use Nero as well, and even with it set to normal, I didn't run into that.

It is recommended that for optimum performance you should adjust your page-file (virtual memory) settings by putting the initial size equal to the maximum, thereby creating a static page file. Also remember that defragmenting your disc does not normally defrag the page file: to do that you have to alter your page file setting to none, restart, then defrag, then restore your page file setting, then restart
