please put a size limit output function in limewire...

Limewire gurus, please put some kind of option to limit the size to either above or below certain file sizes to avoid getting millions of 147.5 kb files for, say, ghost recon, or 187.7 kb for some other monster program which is far bigger than the file size shown, obviously they're a virus, and thank god for bitzi, but c'mon, let's get rid of this ****... I think if you limit the search to files greater than 3 megs (when you know you're looking for a file thats greater then 3 megs), you would get fewer results from these idiots seeding these time wasting files. same goes for 100+Mb files, why would I want to check bitzi for a file that shows 87kb, or why would I want to look through hundreds of files just to find one or two..., ok, I can use the size order and put the biggest on top, but the other files seem to clog up the rest of the search and I get left with one, two or no file I want out of many....
is it feasible??? I hope....
thx

Sphinx August 24th, 2006 01:46 AM

Sorry, but, there's no real way to do that in any P2P program because if there was a way, I'm sure it would have been added by now.

Seith August 24th, 2006 05:56 AM

Although there would be a possibility of putting an option in the search of a minimum result size... the best thing to do (for now) would click the SIZE column head twice, thus putting all the small files to the bottom of the search results and the largest at the top (going by your opinion would mean "valid" hits being at the top)

^_^ Stay safe in your searches, always use an anti-virus program to scan programs and EXE files before running them on your computer to aviod naughty programs!

Seith

limewireuserabuser August 24th, 2006 07:03 AM

Yes, i always check bitzi, and always scan the file with my antivirus and antspyware programs before opening anyways....
And sphinx, anything is possible, someone only has to write the code and voila'....
thx

Sphinx August 24th, 2006 07:25 AM

True but I have yet to see it and Ive been a long time P2P user. Filters can only filterout keywords. I have yet to see any app filterout by size. There is away to get rid of junk files in your LW settings though. I use this and tweak my settings and it pretty much rids myself of unwanted search results. ;)

Seith August 24th, 2006 08:09 AM

limewireuserabuser is totally correct... filtering file size is easy math scripting, just "if, "then" and "else" - seeing as all incoming hits are put through your custom filter anyway it should be easy.

If it's something you feel will greatly aid limewire users you can submit it to the limewire production team - but I can't remember the email for it or the link to it, see the website http://www.limewire.com clicky :)

Lord of the Rings August 24th, 2006 08:23 AM

The LW softw team have apparently discussed size filters. But the problem is if they introduce it, then spam will simply get bigger. Then instead of it being less than 1,000 KB (1 MB), it will then become as large as any file out there. As it is, spamming of fake files is already here. The Junk filter which is a dynamic learning filter, filters out most common spam anyway. It requires a lot of persistence to learn to cope with viruses however. The junk filter only works when the user applies it. Not on its own.

Seith August 24th, 2006 08:33 AM

Well they can put it as a search option
Search results (< X) and (> Y)

That shouldn't be a problem, and it would help aviod small files when searching for files over 100MB

This said, you can still sort the search results accending or decending... so I don't see a problem... nor the use for this request =)

Seith

Lord of the Rings August 24th, 2006 08:38 AM

I made a request for it 2 years ago. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...ht=size+filter

Yes I totally agree with your point!!! It has been requested many, many times since. But it's up to the LW team & their reasoning.

Seith August 24th, 2006 08:41 AM

Not being vigilant and just looking at file size is being lazy :P

Plus... would you REALLY use it? I try to aviod using anything that's going to trim my search hits, just download everything then decide what you don't need xD

limewireuserabuser August 24th, 2006 01:26 PM

Ok, thank you for the interest in this... Lord of the rings, I read your past topic on this, I was sure I wasn't going to invent gun powder all over again, so that proves me I am not alone in this quest. Let's then put some kind of virus check on limewire where it will not let you share a file if it contains a virus, or if the file size does not match the known file size for a given program, something like a general scanner, that would take care of the unsuspecting sharers out there. As for the users ho deliberately share these files, well..... a nice surprise visit at their home with a baseball bat would be nice, but let's be realistic.... that would hurt them badly.
I say Limewire should take into account these ideas, and maybe give them a try, release a beta with it and see what happens...
today I looked for a boot manager which weighs 7 megs, I couldn't even begin to explain how many times I had to mark as junk files of less size, until after 50 "get more results" I found ONE hwich was 7,107... beautiful, and thank you limewire, but that only shows me that these smaller files tend to butt in in front of the legit files, and just cram up the results leaving no room for the good ones. If junk or virus files get bigger, then it means your usual user out there wont want to have a 100mb file just sitting around being useless, and thus would most likely delete it, it would also be harder to spread because being so large, and maybe already tagged by bitzi, no one would get it, or they would make sure it was not a virus. Small files are usually downloaded without checking because they're quick to download and generally the person doesnt have too much of a clueas to what they're doing...
I have an idea, Bitzi was somehow founded and it's a great help....
but why not create a similar project where the file sizes of legit software are recorded much in the same way that these files get bitprints so as to have a record of an original file size, then, whenever a file gets recorded as a virus, or incomplete one could check in the same way we do bitzi. maybe even with a "file size discrepancy" alert to the user...
Well, I'm not the brightest bulb in the knife drawer , but I actually think that with the right people on it, this thing could work. if anything it would certainly make it harder for these crackhead losers to keep seeding junk to people.....
thank you for waisting 3 minutes of your lives reading this.....

Lord of the Rings August 24th, 2006 04:00 PM

I think it sounds like a great idea. Why not suggest it at the LW forums as a potential bounty? The LW beta forums can be found here (but it's a different forum & need to do a separate registration): http://www.limewire.org/forum/index.php

BTW if people seriously want specific improvements in LW, you can sponsor them if you're willing. ie: Put the money forward for creating such an improvement & either the LW team or other donators of code will try to create such a code patch to do what this request is. LW put bounties rewards on things they'd like done. But this can also be done independently. If you want to find out more, send me a private message by clicking on my username & send message.

Sphinx August 24th, 2006 06:49 PM

Sorry Seith I disagree. 1) the small, junk files ARE generated trojans/viruses/worms. 2) They usually appear at the top of your search results 3) There's no way to filterout a generated trojan/virus/worm by size.

The keyword is 'generated' in the old days, Napster/OpenNap users word change their titles slightly to avoid the filters etc. They do this on Gnutella so how would filtering by size work on something that can be renamed or is a dummy file generated by a dummy machine? ;)

It wouldnt work and if users simply tweaked their settings, they wouldnt see so much junk in their search. Interesting but have yet to see it as a feature Its the Users who control Gnutella not Limewire. You can not filterout something that is automatically generated if that were true then we'd have no need for automatic spam emails in our inbox. Even spam fiters find ways go get around that.

You can request it until you're blue in the face. I cant see it working nor can I see any programmer taking their time to invent it.

(my 2 cents)

Seith August 25th, 2006 01:45 AM

You can't disagree about what I said, becuase I didn't give an opinion... I said a truth :)

When you first search you see it organised as you set before (name, result#)
http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/7227/img1sa5.png

Clicking the Size column headder once sorts it ascending [/\]
http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/1567/img2bt0.png

Clicking it again sorts it descending [\/]
http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/8572/img3fo4.png

If you can't see the SIZE column, right click one of the column headings, and select "Size" from the popup menu.

=) Thus making all virus/trojan suspected files (the small ones) at the bottom and out of sight.

Now if I could only get rid of anything smaller than 2 megs when I know i am looking for something that is over 2 megs??

Oh, and the exe file is freeware and it worked fine with no virus or spyware...

Hyper-kun August 25th, 2006 10:08 AM

Why the heck do you download such crap? If you really need DOS there's a free and legal alternative:
http://www.freedos.org/

I'm surprised that people download executables from Gnutella. Did you visit the official site first to get a signature or checksum at least? If not, do you really think a software is safe if your virus scanner reports nothing? There's certainly no 100% safety or security but if you don't even try, you get none and deserve none. The problem though is, it's not just you, who's going to suffer but potentially millions of people who are going to receive spam (******, IM, Gnutella etc.) from your machine.

Edit: Oh, wow, you censor the short form of "electronic mail".

ukbobboy01 August 25th, 2006 10:45 AM

Hyper-kun

I don't often agree with you but I certainly do on this one, people who download exe files from the P2P network without having the common sense to protect their PCs deserve what they get. And even if they had an AV, as you said, there is no such thing as 100% protection.

The biggest and best protection anyone can use on there PC is "Common Sense" but if users refuse to use it then it is the rest of us on the network that will ultimately suffers.

limewireuserabuser August 25th, 2006 10:55 AM

I ty to do everything in my power to stay clean through virus scanning and sometimes knowing the file size before I download, especially .exe extensions. When I really doubt the validity of a program I really need, I have a second computer which I use to first install and test programs, once they pass they come into my computer. Most people can't do this, or think it takes too long, but after being hit several times in my life with some killer viruses, or virii, whatever... I learned to be more patient. That is why I need to have this function put in place, so that I can weed out file sizes I KNOW i dont need, and so if Im looking for a small file size, I can open the filter back up and search all files.... I dont think it's such a bad idea, I think it wouldnt take much code writing since they could prety much copy and paste some portion of the search features changing only to output file sizes greater than =x or only files lower than =y or none and then cram it in the next beta...
C'mon, if I paid for this program I would like my opinions really considered, or for someone to shut me up by really explaining why it is so difficult if not impossible to incorporate such feature in Limewire...

Sphinx August 25th, 2006 09:47 PM

I gave my reasons why it will never be done. You CANNOT filter by size if its a generated trojan. The trojans/junk files are GENERATED because of WHAT YOU typed in the search. Dont you get it? You cant block it by size filter because ITS GENERATED and will keep spawning each time a keyword is typed up. I trhink its funny you whining about size filters in Limewire just so you can steal something without getting a virus. You steal software, you run the risk of getting a virus, no matter what the size of the file is.

Im not a programmer but Ive been on Gnutella long enough to know that YOU CANNOT nor a programmer CANNOT filterout a GENERATED trojan by size because it will just spawn into a larger file. No one gets it. The files are small because nothing blocks it. Keywords typed in the search generates the trojan/junk so its at the top of your list along with other trojans/viruses right? So, if someone invents a SIZE FILTER what do you think will happen? They will generate into bigger files over 5megs and then what? You still will need yet another filter by size etc. Its like a catch 22. ;)

limewireuserabuser August 25th, 2006 11:41 PM

First of all, Im not whining, im voicing my opinion, and I'm glad you're trying to put it down, it just makes my day... second, I would still like to see a size filter anyways so i can only look for a given file when I know the aproximate filesize, third, what kind of things do you look for with limewire? Im sure you cant say without lying you've never donloaded anything which you weren't suppossed to, so don't come in here acting noble , because you're not fooling anyone but yourself.
If you want to assume i "steal" software, then, hey, you're just going to have to figure that sh!t out on your own, I won't lose any sleep over it.
Another thing, since these tojans get generated and become whatever they want, how come they don't spawn into bigger full programs? I mean, whoever makes these codes should know that most people will not download, let's say windows xp, for the sake of argument, if it shows 87kb instead of 5 or 600mb, right? why dont they just make them spawn into a 500mb file so people do download it more often?? I mean, isnt the whole virus idea to make people's computers go nuts, break down or other malicious acts? wouldn't the coder want as many people as possible to get infected? so why not go that route from the get go??
If the size filter is on the user side, it wouldnt interact with anything outside the program, the filter only does exactly that, filters out incoming info and does not show it, pretty simple I think. It wouldnt be a cure because nothing ever is, someone will always figure out a way to bend or break the rules, all im worried about is being able to find files of the sizes I know, say I want a codec pack thats 1.2mb I do not want to see anything less than 1 meg, i set the filter to only show 1 meg and up, tell me how on earth any tojan out there could know I have a filter set on above 1 meg when the filter is passive on my side, Limewire wouldnt be sending out nothing but the keywords I am looking for and hence the miserable "generated" tojans would go nuts sending out hits but I would never se them.

limewireuserabuser August 26th, 2006 12:32 PM

...

limewireuserabuser August 27th, 2006 05:06 PM

Looking up "catch 22" I came across this:
"A situation in which a desired outcome or solution is impossible to attain because of a set of inherently illogical rules or conditions:...blah blah" http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Catch-22
Yes, as you put it, it would be impossible due to the rules and conditions set by yourself since you are assuming the host receives your keyword along with a file size request.
But since no request is made other than a keyword, it would be impossible to know what file sizes the client is filtering on their end.
So the thought that a trojan would generate upon receiving a keyword request would be inherently illogical.
please correct me if Im wrong.

Sleepless August 27th, 2006 05:14 PM

You are right about that, however the spammers would soon catch on and flood the network even more in all sizes

By itself it wouldn't work for long, but in conjunction with a IP filter or maybe even a hashfilter (AaronWalkhouse is trying to get the programmers to implement these options in the next major version) it would in my oppinion work great

http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=53331

limewireuserabuser August 27th, 2006 06:03 PM

Ok... If we place an ip filter would it work against dynamic ip's, or ip changing software? and a hashfilter along with a size filter? we need to do something about this. Even if spam gets bigger, who will want their computers uploading huge files constantly? I think a passive size filter on the user end would help. A hash verification process would be even better as you said along with a size filter on the user end would probably be the best way to go, Bitzi has done an awsome job at identifying files by bitprints, why not use bitzi then to filter out of the network alltoghether files with prints that have negative comments, or are confirmed corrupt, a virus, etc....?? let's say after receiving 6 negative comments, a file gets banned... or reviewed and banned...
I think it is worth a try, maybe they should just do it and see what happens.

Sleepless August 27th, 2006 07:09 PM

An IP Filter won't work as well on dynamic IP's as static IP's, but it will help as dynamic IP's are usually rotated (there may be some casualties, but they can always get static).

The hashfilter will only work on known bad files, but still a large improvement. It will make the spammers and MAFIAA have to work even harder to mess up Limewire (Far to easy as it is right now)

The filesize filter will make them have to make larger bad files which in turn will need longer to download taking up their bandwidth and slots

All three together would give them a real headache :D

Lord of the Rings August 27th, 2006 07:26 PM

I wouldn't put it above them. I can assure you they can afford it. They bring in millions of dollars via the music business. Many of those dollars that the artists should but aren't receiving in the 1st place. So what a pack of hypocrites heh!!!

limewireuserabuser August 27th, 2006 07:28 PM

I hope they really take a look into this....
Ok, nothing to do with anything.... I just had to look up Faroe Islands on the web (never heard of them before).... It's a beautiful place from the pictures i seen... do you know of a website where i can see more, or better pics? I only saw a few....

Sleepless August 27th, 2006 07:55 PM

Can't think of one right now

Google is probably your best shot. Try typing .fo into domain

Here is one with lots of pictures (don't know about the quality though)

LOL forgot to post the link

Ok, but isn't true that a great % of these are also un/suspecting users? Im sure the ones that know they are seeding these files would get tired of seeing their computers become bandwidth hogs, and the ones that don't know would figure it out quickly since these files would take a while to upload... correct me if I'm wrong, but that would probably take care of a large amount of seeders, then the problem would lie almost solely on spammers and ****oles.
I mean they might as well keep their file sizes to a minimum because if they cram up p2p networks with massive amounts of data, it would probably mean the end of p2p as we know it, then they would be losing too....

WOW!!! what a cool place, I'm a sights freak for lack of a better desciption, and this place really blows my mind...
I've been around quite a few countries, and seen spectacular sights, reminds me of my travels to the south of Argentina... . I've also seen grass on the roof in Villa Gesell Argentina, and now I've seen it again....this place really caught my attention, I think I will add it to my "places to go before I croak" list ;)

Sorry, I will not stray from the subject anymore...

Well, it's a lot more thorough than anything else I've seen here... So yeah, let's hope and pray....
By the way... When is the best time to go to the Islands??
Is it too cold in the winter, and which months are winter? does the sea ice or no?
Im sorry,Ive looked up some info but it's just too generalized...
thx

This probably the best english version link I could find without extensive searching.

http://www.greengate.fo/default.asp?lang=4

Tourist guide has a lot of info. If you use GreenGate to book it of course comes at a cost. But they are really reliable if there is any trouble (know one or two people there)

BTW I would really suggest travelling by sea because of the fog that really likes our airport in the summer. If flying you could very well end up spending like the first 2-3 days at some hotel waiting for it to clear instead of actually arriving here.

Do plan as well as possible without giving yourself too tight a schedule. If you are the outdoorsy type bring a tent, but there is always a risk in doing so because of the unpredictable weather. Even though expensive I would recommend finding accommodations for each day and have the tent as an option rather than a necessity.

Also I'm sure that you can communicate with Greengate through email to help and give advice with planning your vacation

A RV is also an exelent option but I don't know how rentals work here or even if there are any. If travelling by boat that should be no problem though, as you could just rent one in eg. Denmark

Iceland is also very beautiful and I think it's on the Ferrys route as well in the summer (BIG Ferry. Don't really know why they call it a ferry. More like a ship)
Could fly to there and then sail to Faroe Islands if it does.

http://www.smyril-line.com/ (the ferry that sails between the countries)

edit: After asking someone at Greengate I found out that they mostly handle packaged tours with many people and business trips, but was given this link, which by the way is also linked to from their site.
