Default Upload limit; locations; freeloaders misc...

A while ago I wrote how the Preview function eats up disc space without the user knowing it. When someone is uploading from me and their line shows "upload limit reached", does that mean they've run out of disc space? When I ran out of space it said on my dl line "disc error". It took a while to realize all this.
I recently saw "freeloader uploading" on an upload line. I don't block them because I want my rare music to get around, I'm not concerned. However nothing was uploading to him. I hope LW doesn't block it, even tho I set zero as the number that uploaders need to share (in options).
By the way, what does the column "locations" mean?

George,
"When someone is uploading from me and their line shows "upload limit reached", does that mean they've run out of disc space?"

In a word NO.
It simpley means the person has set there total up/loads or Per-Person up/loads to a set figure, "upload limit reached", comes when someone requests more than the set limmit.
Happy searching.

And locations:
Quote:
Locations (number of hosts from which you downloaded the file and number of hosts to whom the file has been uploaded)
That's taken from the LW user guide:wink:

I have modem, and set my max uploads to 3 at a time, with 10 per person. I vary the upload speed between 2 and 5 Kb, it never seems to exceed 3 anyway. It's not that someone asks for more than 3, because then they are "cued" (which I love to see). It must be that there's not enough bandwidth at the time for 3 uploads?
I've never seen the Locations column behave the way Birdy says. It never says anything. That answer doesn't work. (version 4.12.6). Thanks for answering.

I recently noticed the same "upload limit reached" line. Do you mean that the uploader was blocked because of a limit I set? Is that a "permanent" block, or the equivalent of the "waiting for busy host" message you see when you try and download more than 3 (usually, as that is the default value) files from one host?
I would not want to completely block somebody (in fact, I put in a higher number than 3, so people can download complete albums more easily) allthough I guess some sort of (temporary) limit is OK to keep things running fairly smoothly.

It only means Upload limit reached. The user trying to download from you will not get banned, but if he continues to request the files over and over again in a short amount of time, he will be temporarily banned and message will say "Banned Greedy Servent" (I think until next time you restart, but not really sure)

I'm still not clear on this either. Remembering the difference between down and up, I see no such thing as a per person download limit. As I said I allow 20 uploads per person but that message still appears for them. I allow max 3 simultaneous uploads, but more only causes Queuing. Is it when they are downloading more than their max downloads at one time, and I see that Limit message? On their end it would just Queue (yikes how do you spell that word).
And I still say I don't want anyone banned from my collection. That goes against the very point of collecting things that are great.
Oh and max 20 uploads per person - I hope that only applies per session, not lifetime.

George Hi
Your giving conflicting info, "As I said I allow 20 uploads per person" ? NO
You said 10, 20 may cause cloging on a modem connection.
You have a modem connection, So these settings I recomend 2or3 Max up
6to10 per person, Try it, you can reset it if it dont work for you.
Now what is this about you setting upload speed per person ?
That slider is a total upload speed for all uploads.
So if you set it at 15, then 3 people will get 5KBs each. any less, and most people wont bother trying.
"Banned Greedy Servent", this is a safty switch, lasts just half an hour.
and then they can connect OK.
anything I missed just Shout.
Peace.

I increased max per person to 20 just to not have any limitation, and I assume it's per session. Total simult. max uploads 3, then it cues. Maybe 65% finish my slow uploads because I deal with stuff others don't have, and isn't reissued. Many nonhits from 50s and 60s. No Chuck Berry Johnny B Goode, that's easy to buy. Point: if I'm going for 8 of one person's songs and my max dl is 5, 3 cue for me. Then does the OTHER person see "upload limit reached"? Makes eveyone curious.

When I go for 8 of one hosts songs I only grab two at a time. Successrate gets much higher if you do that. If some one went for 8 of my uploads at the same time and I noticed, I think I'd just kill the uploads to let someone grab a normal amount of simultaineous downloads.

If you grab two at a time and start the third when the first one finishes, you get a nice constant flow. Almost never transfer interupted etc.
