You may have downloaded a virus. Some viruses will alter file formats!
Try a system restore to a date prior to getting the virus.

If your computer's folder files have changed from mp3 to exe, you have a virus.
First you must determine the approximate date the problem began.
Open search tool in your start menu.
Enter "system restore" in the search tool.
When you find the folder that contains System Restore, click an icon that will open the program.
Enter a date prior to when your .exe problem began. This should restore your computer to it's healthy state. xx

If System Restore doesn't work, try downloading AVG(free), update it, scan your computer. It's worked for others: AVG Free Advisor: AVG Anti-Virus Free

To get your files back, you will probably need to run a file recovery program. Follow the links in this thread: File recovery advice!

You definately have a virus, ridding yourself of it should be the priority. D/load AVG(FREE) update it and run it to get rid of the virus. If you don't get rid of the virus, every time you restart you computer all your files will be exe's. You can always redownload your files again.

Default Link to someone with same problem (no solution yet)

the guy in this link had the same problem as you so you two should keep tabs on each other's threads.

If it is a virus, maybe you two could see if you downloaded anything similar to warn others.

just a thought...
