Not all coverted movies play on my DVD

I have been converting downloaded avi into viewable movies. However, about half of them won't play on my DVD player. I use the same DVD's so thats not my problem. Is there any software that coverts to movie and puts in all possible needed formats for playing.

Nero is one. I use this AVS Video Tools, Video Converter, Audio Tools, Video Editor, DVD Player, DVD Copy, TV Box.
You might do a Google Search. There are quite a few options out there.

Thanks for the advise

I have Roxio Media Creator 8 and thought that this would always convert everything to the same output.
Are there settings that need to be made for each movie that overide formats in the AVI format that you know off?

I will give the Nero trial version a try to see if they play the previous un-playable... THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR RESPONSE

AVI is tricky
my player ONLY plays AVI IF codec is xvid
