It is called explore.exe, it doesn't open in safe mode, and i have tried deleting it in safe mode so that means that closing it down and trying to delete is the same as doing it using safe mode, which didn't worrk |

Well since you seem to know everything, I guess not much use trying to help, but assure you you have no idea what you are saying. Something is connected to that file and you need to shut that process down. All you need to have left are the basic things keeping the computer on and cmd.exe (command prompt, should have same name in Vista) I have had a very similar problem i the past and it was the only way. In my case it was the explorer.exe process that was affected. In your case it might be some other process. Apart from that. If you still can't delete it then. Is the file even there? Could be a registry malfunction. Maybe try a registry cleaner and see if it disappears. Very unlikely as it freezes your computer trying to do anything with it, but still plausible. Edit: if you can see it in the command prompt then the file is there. |

Safe mode opens more things that you need for the task you are trying to perform. You only need to have the processes open that prevent the computer from shutting down and keeping cmd.exe running. One thing we haven't tried is trying to figure out exactly what process is making the computer freeze. Start the task manager in safe mode. Keep the processes tab in task manager open. rearrange by cpu use and then try doing something to the file. When the computer freezes one or two the processes should go up by a lot. If it does then you know whaqt must be stopped. Then it's just to hope it isn't an important process. |

These are the 3 processes open in order of highest CPU explorer.exe winlogon.exe csrss.exe the last 2 tend to keep swapping places, what should i do with them, ending explorer freezes the system up and the desktop goes black which it is meant to but the rest of the proccesses CPU goes to 00, if you could give me some more detailed instructions that would be |

I will have a look at it tomorrow. Problem is that I don't use Vista myself i.e. I don't know if the computer will even run if winlogon.exe process is stopped. Does the command prompt go away when you end the explorer process? If it doesn't then there should be no problem deleting it through there. Anyways like I said I will have a closer look tomorrow. Edit: I just tried ending the explorer.exe process in XP while keeping the command prompt and it worked. So try doing that in Vista If it does then give me the complete path to the file you want to delete and I will give you step be step instructions |
