Default installation aborts

greetings!

i'm having problems installing limewire. i have a winxpsp2 platform. i have installed limewire before until i noticed that limewire 'automatically' starts up. and in multiples by the system tray! that made me uninstall limewire. now i've attempted installing limewire, many times, but failed. limewire support suggests i uninstall everything associated w/limewire. it didn't work. what's wrong? am i infected? i really need help since i've been going in circles installing & uninstalling java & limewire.

will appreciate any advice you can give me.

thanks in advance!

What happens when you try to reinstall LW...are you getting an error??
Did you uninstall your old LW before trying to install a new version? If so, how did you uninstall LW (ie via start > all programs > LW > uninstall, or via Add/Remove Programs)?

If LW kept restarting & you didn't have 'run on system startup' ticked in LW's tools > options > advanced > system startup...it may be that you have a worm.

The thread below has a few different fixes to try, if you think your computer might be infected.

thanks for the quick reply!

i think i still have the 'old' limewire in my system, or somewhere. i know i've already uninstalled it. i even used the regedit app of winxp just to troubleshoot my problem.
here's the error message by java:

"one or more necessary files appear to be invalid.this is generally caused by a corrupted installation.please try downloading and installing limewire again...(blah,blah,blah)"

i've done this but the problem is still here.

Before you ever uninstalled LW, was it popping up all the time (not just once when you turn on your comp, but every couple of minutes)?
If that was happening then there's a good chance that you're infected. In that case, try the fixes in the link I gave in post #2.

If there was no popping up of the original LW, you might just've stuffed up the uninstall (don't use Add/Remove Progs...uninstall via Start > All Progs > LW > use the uninstall option).

Open Task Manager, click on the Processes tab. If there's any LW process running, end the process. If that's not the answer, use the computer's search to look for all files & folders with limewire in the name & delete what you find, you could also try using CCleaner - Home.
*If you've changed any saved/shared folders from the defaults,or have any saved/shared folders with limewire in the name, make sure that you don't delete those folders in the process!!!*

Next, delete LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will change all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things. If you're not sure of your settings, go through LW's tools > options & write them all down, so that you can reset things later.

Last of all, reinstall LW. I guess you have Pro?

you know the java error message i told you about? it keeps popping up.

the LW folder in the Start up>All Programs isn't there anymore. i was supposed to uninstall it from there but i think i've erased it.

anyway, my problem isn't restarting. rather the LW icon in the system tray piles up. there was one instance i saw 3 LW icons! it's like i turned it on 3 times! now when i noticed that i suspected so i uninstalled it using control panel>add/remove progs. of course i have to install it again. when i downloaded the same program, the free version, i started installing. then the problem started, it can't finish the installation. it hangs somewhere when its about to finish. this is where i went in circles installing/uninstalling both java & LW. and here i am posting w/u.

you know this java error message keeps interrupting while i'm typing this message. and it makes a clicking sound as if i'm accessing a link.

thanks for bearing with me.

If that error keeps popping up despite LW being uninstalled, I think you're infected.

Go back to the link that I left in post #2 & try the different fixes posted there. You'll also find linbks there to sites that specialise in help with malware removal...if you can't get things sorted, go to one of those sites & they'll help you with the problem.

Good luck!

i was definitely infected. i downloaded spybot-S&D & it did the trick. too bad i didn't take note which virus got me. i think they're malwares or adwares or both.

now i'm using LW again. well, thanks for the advice you gave me.

more power.

Wow...Spybot fixed it for you, that's good to know. Lots of people have had this popping up thing & it used to be that the BFU was the only fix. Then over time a few other things have helped as well (maybe variants of the original worm?).

Thanks heaps for letting us know about Spybot catching it...that'll help other people

Download Spybot from here: Spybot S & D (free) Make sure to update Spybot before you scan your computer!!
