Help ! unreliable downloading

I am at school, and I didn't think I wasbehind a firewall, but all my host connections say outgoing, and when i do finally get something to download (and this is true of all of the file sharing utilities- ie Morpheus, Direct Connect..) It only downloads at very, very slow rates ( = 1.4Kbps)
I have my IP Address in the Force IP box, but is there any way of me finding out a port on the "firewall" to force it through? Do you think it's even a firewall? In NetMeeting I can see other people's video, but only sometimes they can see mine... That might be their firewall, though...

I just Talked to academic supprt- they said that there is NO firewall, but they put "caps" on these types of programs, so it doesn't eat up the network bandwith... Is there any way to get around this? I know that with AudioGalaxy (html-based) I can download at very fast speeds... Thanks again...

Well, your post answered the questions I had. I'm also on a university campus and my downloads have been acting weird. So, I'm guessing they also capped my connection.

I'm no expert when it comes to networks, but I would think that they could only cap the amount of data going through a certain ports as they would have no way to tell what packets are being sent by/to a specific program.

I've tried messing around with the force ip option, but I haven't had any success. If it is possible to get around the cap by doing this, then I would suggest using some random port that isn't known for it's file sharing use. But I have no idea and I've never had any success finding help with this sort of problem on these boards.

Easy. Buy your own bandwidth. I'm a little sick about hearing people on connections they do not pay for (work, university etc.) whine about their admin capping their download speed. Its even worse to wander around asking how to get round it. Your admin has a hard enough job as it is, without worrying about you circumventing his hard work.

Its being capped for a good reason - if it wasn't, people like you would bring the network to its knees with irresponsible down- and uploading (or even just large numbers of people being perfectly responsible). I know this bcause I have had to deal with it.

Let's face it - most of the internet is just not ready yet for unrestricted peer-to-peer networking, so we have to compromise for now, and make do with what we have.

In the UK we have some of the least affordable broadband in the world (or so we keep getting told) but looking at prices here, they are well within reach of nearly everybody who spends a lot of time on the net (because they have high phone bills already, or spend a fortune on unmetered modem access).

So instead of looking to someone else to solve your 'problem', solve it yourself. If necessary, get a job outside of school to help pay for your addiction. It might also teach you some life skills which will help you see your difficulties from the other person's point of view.

Sorry - couldn't help it because I am frustrated at getting Limewire to work at all due to some bug which they can't be bothered to admit to. But then again I think I do have a point
