Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Question Setting Upload Limits Does Not Work!

Setting my upload limit for sharing has never worked. I have tried different limits (8,4,6,3) over a couple of years, so one uploader cannot choke my sharing with all LW users with a whack of requests. The 'upload limit reached' appears, and the uploader can keep adding upload requests, which are either successful or queued. In the spirit of LWire, I always have 'chat' on, so users can browse my shared folder, and pick a FEW. Leaving LW on for 6-12 hours is typical for me, and I can't monitor it all the time. For a long time added 'abusers' to the Filter 'host' blacklist, but with a very long list of uploads, and quite a few abusers every time am on, have given up using 'host' block; its a pain. As a matter of p2p principle, users should use 'chat' smiley, but a majority do not. For the moment, going to stick with 'chat', IF I can get a solution or explanation from monitors or members WHY DON'T UPLOAD LIMITS WORK? Does someone have a configuration where it does work? Answers please. caseybob

Smile Upload Limits

First of all, what version are you running?

I will Give you my configuration for LimewirePRO 4.16.4

Under Uploads Basic I have bandwidth set to MAX Under SLOTS and Uploads Per Person I have it set to 3 and Max Upload slots set to 12

Now go to ADVANCED and then PREFERENCING and set the allow freeloaders set to RARELY and set the Shared not to be a freeloader to 100

I am currently sharing 3,907 files....so I don't think asking for no freeloaders is a bad thing. Especially just 100 files to be shared.

Whether you have CHAT on or off is up to you, however note that whenever someone does browse,it slows both your upload and download speed down, although they still will not be able to download more than 3 files at a time and they about 90% of the time have 100 or more files they are sharing.

Smile Reply to KoolerBlaster re: U'load limits do NOT work!

Hey KB: I have LW Basic 4.17.0 with java 1.6.0_04 and about 1,800 audio files. I have only 256Kb/s IP connection until can afford faster, which is primary problem. However, that should not prevent 'upload limits' per person set at 5, with u'load slots at 2, from working. It is not clear to me if the u'load limits per person are for each session, or permanent...do you know? Have followed your suggestions and also disabled 'chat' as an experiment to see if it helps. But I strongly believe everybody, at least with fast connection, should use 'chat', because it is primary principle behind whole idea of p2p sharing. Perhaps will leave 'chat' off until I get 5Mb/s+ ISP connection. Thanks for helpful reply, caseybob

Wink Upload Limits Part Deux

Hey CB: First of all you have an older BETA version of LW,which the new BETA version is 4.17.6 and you would probably be better suited to go to the BETA Forum site located here>LimeWire Forums
your Java version is out of date as well,if you get the new LIMEWIRE BETA available here>Lime Wire » Download LimeWire Beta it comes with the later version Java 1.6.0_05. So this may not have been you,it may be that Beta version you have. You may want to go to the stable Basic Version which is 4.16.6 available here >Lime Wire » Download LimeWire.

As an experiment though I did get the new BETA version and put it on my PC I use for testing and it worked. A simple thing make sure after you make changes to click the APPLY button. Keep in mind that when you do make changes it will not be immediate,if you have peers connected it will take up to possibly an hour before it gets where you want it....unless you make the changes and apply them then close out and restart LW..... However the newer Beta version worked perfectly fine as in regard to your question.

Your internet connection speed is not going to affect the area you are concerned with other than having chat on,as I mentioned.

As for the upploads per person, they are not permanent...per se'. They are that way until you change them for every session.

Fast internet connection or not,I don't ever have chat on,it could help out an exploit(er) if you have one or if LW has one. So,it does not limit P2P,it just means that other peers either A) have to directly connect to your IP or B) have a specific search that relates to the file(s) you are hosting.

Now to answer the lost person of pmahoney.........

First of all the movie titles are not allowed due to possible copyright issues, and your e-mail address is not allowed to be posted either.

However, some people mistakenly name the file(s) wrong, or do it on purpose....for what reason I dunno. It has happened many a time to most of us, your BEST FRIEND is the PREVIEW button(keep in mind it does not work on all file types....but most) and can save you a LOT of wasted download time.

You can also use Bitzi by doing the following

How to avoid downloading bogus movie files:

right-click a file in your Search Window, scroll down to Advanced, select "Lookup File with Bitzi". You will find info regarding audio/video quality, or if the file is bogus or mis-named.
most AVI files that I've looked up are listed at Bitzi. Bitzi tells you about the exact file that you are considering.

Remember that Bitzi is done by contribution,so if you find a Bogus File...please list it in Bitzi!!

KoolerBlaster

Smile Reply to KBlaster re: upload limits

Hey KB: D'loaded 4.17.6 BETA & Java 05 and it seems a bit faster on start-up and runs fine. Don't know about Upload Limits with this version yet; we shall see. It seems my IP has found a new way to throttle bandwidth, which I have had a running battle about for several years. What appears to be a new addition to throttling is to flood every single one of my 1800 audio files with 53 to 60 hits within a couple of minutes of start-up...it seems unlikely every file would get approximately same high number of hits in such a short time, while my Monitor Upload screen remains empty. It started about 2weeks ago with old BETA and popped up again overnight with new BETA. All this is with 'chat' off and after midnight when there isn't heavy traffic load on I'Net. C'est La Vie. caseybob

With 1800+ files it will be a quicker way for you to get hits, with over 3900 files I get the same amount of hits,if you spend a lot of time on LW you may be being tagged as an Ultra peer, in which case you would get an even higher amount of hits, you may want to disable Ultrapeer from your LW,especially if your IP has bandwidth issues and is throttling it somehow. Normally, most IP's only throttle during peak areas, as I see you know.
Hits though are just that, Hits,it means someone somewhere searched a keyword in the file you are hosting. I will take a couple of snapshots of my LW settings and Hits after a few minutes, and show you.

The Beta Version I have been running on the test computer has some bugs, but not any in the area you are having issues with,at least not yet.
You may also want to think about not sharing the high hit files....I know this hampers the whole P2P theme....but hey,you gotta do what you gotta do.
If I were you I would try it as an experiment at the very least,to move your files to another folder temporarily and then share crazy files like txt and other things to see if you get the same amount of hits,if you do, it could be a anti-P2P group or person is flooding your IP, in which case I recommend you get PeerGuardian2 available here>Phoenix Labs » PeerGuardian 2
This is also Beta software and only works on most Windows systems.

I do lots of Beta testing, but on my other PC, and good quality software I find I post in forums like this and put on my laptop and this PC....unless I feel lazy or wont be at home for a few days, then I may do it on this PC or my laptop.

KoolerBlaster

Smile REPLY TO KBLASTER re: HUGE # HITS ON LW STARTUP

Hey KB: Thanks for your last one, but you missed one important point. These are not massive hits on every single file at first minute of startup, with DIFFERENT number of hits on each file (1800+)...often, they are EXACTLY the same number of hits in EVERY single file, which kind of rules out just being overly popular. The odds are in at least the tens of millions against. Will get to new folder suggestion test soon.
Refer you to reply I just posted to CNY222 about this same subject.
