Sounds like a codec issue; see CODECs list for Movies/Audio/ Alternate players / Video help forums/ video-mp3 fixers

Thanks for reply. I assumed it was a problem with codecs, so I dl'd codec pack for Xp. Didn't help. Also media player stated 'Acquired codec'. Is it still a codec prob if I only want to play a basic avi. file?

ZIP = a packed file
It needs to be unpacked using a program like WinZip or WinRar or Stuffit or a multitude of others.

Oh if you unpacked it and still showing an error ... then yes a codec problem. We usually recommend using this player instead: VLC - (click on link) _ (choose nearest mirror site) which has in-built codecs.
