Limewire player vs. Windows Media Player

This is a technical question but it doesn't relate to problems with Limewire. In fact I have observed repeatedly that the Limewire Player produces a cleaner sound than the Media Player when playing the same fille in the Limewire shared folder and using the same PC and speakers. The Media Player seems to introduce distortion. I have the latest version of both. The PC runs XP. Has anyone experinced this or have an explanation?
