question about puting songs/ringtones on phone

ok. i know how 2 shorten a song on like itunes & make it into ringtone length. but when i put them on my phone it wouldnt let me use them 4 ringtones. it still said the file was 2 large (as if it was still the whole song). does anyone know anything about this/ what 2 do about it?
