I have XP Media Center Edition, and I don't use any of its media functionalities....rather I choose to simply use WMP for playing media files...others skip WMP all together and use VLC..I install the Klite codec pac for WMP, VLC comes with most all needed codecs....

try right clicking on a file and choosing open with, then choose your desired media player and check the always box...

I don't use Vista, but I know a person who does and I just burned some stuff for him and we played it on his machine to verify it and he has winamp as a default media player and that is what came up....
