Default burning to dvd????

I am sooooo new to this, I am using Nero to burn movies I downloaded on to dvd and when I'm done my stand alone dvd player won't play them. My dvd player should read DVD+RWs so I can figure out what I did wrong. As far as I know Nero should convert the files I DL into the right format. Can someone tell me where I have gone wrong or is my dvd player a piece of ......

You seemed to be clued up on Nero, so sometimes some dvd players like certain brands of disks ie, my player wont play TDK brand but it will play Imation, maybe that could be it, also when converting make sure its compatible with your player eg PAL or NTSC...

since you haven't given any clue as to what steps you used with Nero, its rather hard to say what you are doing wrong...

Try burning at lower speed. like the lowest speed possible. Many DVD-players have trouble reading DVDs thats have been burned at high speeds.
Also you should try using a DVD+R or DVD-R disk and see if that works.

I am guessing that your DVD-player said "Cannot read disk" since you didn't specify any errormessage.
