Question What to do re advice to uninstall?

Lotr,

I have a Win32.asthetic.B trojan that I can't find to delete. I've asked a guy at california associates (EZ AntiVirus detects the trojan) what to do about it. After a couple of back and forths, he's now advised me simply to uninstall Limewire as it's "a known source of difficulty". I think what he's telling me in effect is that he's not going to do much more to help me with my trojan problem until I ditch Limewire.

Well, OK. I could uninstall, get more ca help to clean the trojan and then reinstall Limewire.

If I uninstall Limewire, is there any way to save and store my incomplete download files so that I can reapply them to my later reinstall?

Thanks,

I have a bunch

3 points. There's been a virus attacking many LW users over the past 2 weeks. Someone found an answer to it. It might not be the same one but it's worth looking at: LimeWire continually Popping up every few seconds & also Opening at System Startup

2. The normal process of uninstalling LW is to go to the Start menu >Programs>LW>Uninstall (or you can find the uninstaller in the program folder!)

3. For files that refuse to be deleted, see http://ask-leo.com/why_cant_i_delete_this_file.html

There's also this:
How to delete files from your hard-disk: download: moveonboot.exe
This program will allow you to select a file that you want to move or delete. When you reboot, the file will be moved to the location you want or if you've chosen to delete, it will be gone!

Angry Lotr, thanks for that....

...but I have no indication personally that the trojan has anything to do with Limewire. It may, as the ca guy had a bunch of scan logs and stuff to look at, but he didn't say the trojan came from Limewire, just that I ought to ditch it because it was problem source.

I'll keep your uninstall advice in mind if I decide to do that.

Meanwhile, what happens to my incomplete files? Are they lost if I uninstall, and if so, is there a way to save them, (maybe renaming the file) and then renaming again after I reinstall Limewire?

Thanks again.

Malware sucks.

Back up these:
1. The entire incomplete folder. (You could leave out those files at 0 KB if you wished. The most important files in this folder are the download.dat & .bak files. These are your downld preferences. So safest if you backup the entire folder.
2. Optional: The LW Preferences folder called .limewire & found here: C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire OR Windows 98 / ME: Your .limewire folder is in "C:\My Documents"

Backing up the LW prefs folder would simply make it easier & no need to try to remember your previous settings. By the way, after you re-install LW, you should replace the incomplete folder with the older backed up one (whilst LW is closed.)

Default Limewire uninstalled

Lotr,

Now, hopefully, the ca tech will help me track down the trojan. (After uninstalling Limewire, it seems to be there still.)

He said this, by the way.

"My advice would be to uninstall Limewire as this peer-to-peer software is notorious for creating open shares on your system to allow viruses to infect your computer, which appears may be what is happening in your case."

Can you tell me what he's talking about? I probably ought not to have "open shares on my system that allow viruses to infect my computer"...if that's really what led to my problem.

Regards,

Dubina

Default ca tech said this: can you comment?

"...creating open shares on your system to allow viruses to infect your computer" refers to the fact that some P-2-P software creates a folder on your computer that sets itself to be able to be viewed, accessed and changed via the software, to the point where other people on the P-2-P network can place files onto your system inside that folder, without you knowing about it."

******

Does Limewire do that? I thought it was supposed to be bulletproof.

On the otherhand, I thought ca support tech were supposed to know everything there is to know about P2P sharing problems.

Dilemma.
