Maximising download speeds

Ok - this is a great program - was using Limewire - and didn't like it.

Used an old version for a day and then found 0.5.2 which compiled and installed on my Mandrake 8.2 smooth as peanut butter (the smooth variety).

I just want to make sure that I'm using it optimally.

Does the amount of connections affect the rate of download? I've had some green bar searches, which download at a very slow rate (1k per second and even slower!).

I'm also concerned that I've got the right host setup - is 700 to 1000 hosts about right? Or should it be more?

What settings can I configure to optimize connection speeds?

connections

The number of hosts you're connected with depends on how many nodes u've chosen to be connected to. On the window "connection", u can chose how many outgoing and incoming connections u wanna have.
Personnaly, i use to have 5 outgoing and 5 incoming connections (1 of them is average 500 "hosts" but can be more or less).

The amount of connections does affect the download rate, but unless u have a very slow connection, u can download 3 or 4 files at the same time, cause hosts are used to limit upload rate.

If u want ur download rate to be higher, select "cable/adsl" on "Min speed" from the "search" window.

Hope i helped! ;)

That's the sort of stuff I wanted to hear kris25 - thanks a lot.

If you're on a boring old dialup modem connection, then it can also be useful to disconnect from the network whilst downloading a file which significantly increases the download speed, something I always do when downloading a largeish file.
