@tshdos

I had ben connected to my ISP for 7minutes.
The Xolox program was started about 2 minutes after I connected to my ISP.
Iwas not doing anything with the program, just letting it run.

"You say you sent/recv'd this from 2 ips is that all you were connected to?"

No I had many connections made by Xolox but only 2 of them were Sending/Recieving like mad, the others wernt doing much.

And as to where I got the 5Mb number from,Connection Status.

Thank you for your response.

A couple more questions.

Do you happen to know the approximate number of connections xolox had?

Approximately what speed connection do you have?

The approximate number of connections was around 10 to 15.

And I am using Cable, up to 1Mb/sec transfer.

I am a little amazed at my results but it appears that 5mb/5min is about normal based on your amount of connections and client software. Here are the results from my testing:

The first test was 2 connections for 5 minutes and I transferred about 500Kb +/- 50Kb.

The second test was with 8 hosts and it consumed 3.5Mb/5min

The third test was with 3 connections to "Super Nodes" with 100Kb +/- 25Kb after 5 minutes.

If you don't have any extra bandwidth to "waste" I would suggest you limit the number of connections you keep to between 2 to 4. If you were to use a program that supports "Super Nodes" and you connected as a child (leaf) node your bandwidth would be reduced quite a bit.

PS - I am not sure if xolox supports supernodes so maybe someone could confirm it.

If 5mb/5min is normal, why does Kazaa does not do this, or previously Napster. I have tested kazaa and I was shocked when I saw that it gave a tiny fraction of results compared to Xolox, with COMMVIEW.

Napster used little bandwidth because you were connected to a central server. You did not need to know directly about other clients, the central server took care of that for you.

Example:

Search For "file"

Napster:
Your client asks the server for any files related to the keyword "file". The server the results it finds.

Gnutella:
Your client asks all connected clients for any files related to the keyword "file" the clients in turn search their local files for anything relevant and return the results. They also send the query to all the clients they are connected to ... and so on until the TTL expires on the query ( usually about 4 to 7 levels deep ).

I am not sure about Kazaa so someone who knows should correct me if I am wrong but I think it works on a central server like basis but with more "central servers".

XoloX has three buttons and hides everything "technical" for those of you just want your files, so you don't know what it's up to, it could be a secret child porn ring distribution network and you would never know it.
Why not run a open source client that lets you know what your computer is doing.

'unregistered' it seems your concern ( complaining) has to do with your lack of knowledge of Gnutellanet and you are blaming it on XoloX because of this ignorance.

Every client on Gnutella acts as a server and vice versa ,so the traffic you see is *normal*. By connecting to Gnutella you take part in queries, replies to those queries, and various other messages all standard in the protocol.
Its pretty simple , the more established connections you have to peers the more traffic you will use, the less connections you establish or if connected to an Ultrapeer , then obviously traffic will be lower because less queries will go through you ( not taking into account uploads and downloads or size of library being shared).

You stated you only have 2 connections established with 5mb of traffic in 5 mins. The chances of using that much traffic from queries alone is pretty far fetched for only having 2 connections, not sharing any files , not downloading or uploading, nor acting as an Ultrapeer ( which is not currently possible with XoloX).

You stated: "The approximate number of connections was around 10 to 15" Sorry , this many node connections is currently NOT possible with XoloX but nice try.

Secondly, the file transfer between others did *not* go through you, gnutellanet is only used to locate clients/servents sharing resources and then a direct connection between the clients initiating the transfer is begun.

Lastly, I'm pretty sure NO one here condones Child Porn so don't be so moronic to make such accusations. How do you even know the file title is even what it claims to be? Many moronic people put out file names for porn with complete bogus names. Remember you choose to use this Tool , next time before going on a witch hunt Mr. Inspector Gadget please try at LEAST doing a simple google.com search to enlighten yourself about how Gnutella ( and in turn XoloX) work rather then wasting everyone's time with some false claims.

I do hope you see XoloX for one does not condone Child Porn, the Gnutella Network surely does not, and lastly to minimize your traffic if its such a huge concern try reading the 'tips of the day' in XoloX and you would find that by lowering your max upload speed it also lowers how many active connections you have.

P.S.
If you have such a great connection to be able to perform 5mb of traffic in 5 mins why aren't you sharing files?

Default connections

I have had 17 connections sending packets to me via Xolox at one time. So I guess somebody has been telling you porky pies. Or you dont know the software very well yourself. Also mr unregistered's claims are not completely over ruled with what ur saying Mr Pie Man. Who are you after all? Some spotty nosed techno weener sitting behind his 'puter', with nothing to do with his life than insult misinformed people on forums, and try to force his argument with failing wit and obscure humour down the throats of innocent readers trying to find a solution to why an application that had such an excellent review is, to be frank, a complete waste of the users resources to begin with. I have had 240mb go walk about from my monthly bandwidth upload in the last 24 hours of installing Xolox. So this is just down to queries is it? Yeah I reckon not. I hadnt downloaded anything and had nothing in my shared folder, as it was a fresh HDD about 3 days ago. So the app was running whilst I was testing its resource output via an application called Commview. For anyone else out there looking to find some kind of an answer to this, that is extremely puzzling, get the app, and try for yourselves. This was still the case when lowering the connections, so go figure. Anyway, one place for this application, and thats the bin. I could have made better when I was in college. Pffff...

it's just network traffic. get a life. use a program that has central servers if you don't want to query searches and network traffic.
