Default don't add http:// for URLS, or accept magnet:? as starter for an URL

I just tried again to post magnets of GnuFU, and I can't make them URLs, because the forum-software always adds http:// in front of them (so they don't work).

Could you change this?

Agreed!

Appparently this is fairly easy to set up, as seen in the http://www.magnetmix.com and http://www.magnetdb.com/index.php pages

Technically it shouldn´t be a problem, but I don´t think its a good idea to allow people to post magnet links here. We disussed this several months ago and we saw that we can´t control if the links are legal or not. Arne don´t get me wrong I don´t think you would post illegal links but if we open the door nobody can overview what will happen.

My european two cents.

People can already post magnet links, only they will take up so much space and look ugly. This is just a request to allow them to be formatted properly.

[ugly magnet links edited]

http links can lead to spam or other malware, so that is not a good reason to not format magnets properly.

Arne is right--just don't auto add http to magnets .

magnets are a good way to test for gnutella connectivity on these forums.

Stief we don´t want that people post magnet links on this forum. If Arne and you are now starting others will follow, who will check the links you? Actually we didn´t add this to our rules but I think its time for it.

The http thing isn´t the problem.

The legitimacy of links is a separate problem--same as the legitimacy of http links like in signatures.

You've had a few problems with those in the past, but not enough to ban http links and I think it would be a bad idea to start banning arne and trap_jaw's signature. Both are good examples of links that are posted to help gnutella users.

Magnets are a legitimate protocol--we shouldn't automatically assume they point to infringing content, which is what the **IA want people to think when p2p is discussed.

Perhaps it would be best to add to the rules that if posting a link, make it clear that the content is legitimately shared, asd trap_jaw did here http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=19732

Personally I think magnet support would be a great addition. Of course some people won't follow the rules, but many are already disgressing rules about copyrighted material in posts. I guess mods just would put to trash thread with suspect content, just like we do now.

Ciao

Nobody said that we will ban the signatures. We aren´t talking about HTTP links. HTTP links are no pronlem I can check within a few seconds if this link is Ok or not.

I don´t say that magnet links are automatically illegal. What I say is very simple NOBODY can assure that they are NOT illegal. We can´t check them without downloading the file. We don´t have the time for it... as I said we discussed this already, We didn´t found a practible way to allow magnet links.

et voila... we discussed it veeeeeeeery long and exatly this is the problem. You can´t know that the content is illegal without downloading it... we haven´t the time to check all the links.

I don´t want to discuss the same point twice, I said if anybody will find a practible way its no problem but you know nobody had the magic idea.

I remember the discussion, but I also believe only long timers (meaning they know forum rules) will post magnets. And it's not like we are going to create a forum for that as we ruled that out last time. For me, the only problem is about CC willing to do it.

My 2 cents canadian beaten by your two euro cents
