a complete newbie question about speed

Can ne1 tell me what download speed you would hope to achieve with a 56K dialup connection when only one file is downloading? I'm only getting around 0.9 which seems very slow. My upload speed is set to max as I understand this should also give me max download speed.
I have a 750MHz Pentium III chip. I am not running anything else on my computer at the same time. I am not behind any firewalls and I am not part of any network.
I really am a newbie to file-sharing, so any ideas for improving things in words of one syllable plz.

Thanks

Lower your upload limit/speed to 2K for dial-up. Not to max

For a dial-up 56k connection, you'd hope for a 6KBps download speed at best (maybe 7 if you're not uploading at all and you have a good connection)
