Question download or upload????

First.. sorry for my bad english... this is my little story, i would appreciate some reactions.

My laptop is win NT, Pentium III and have a broadband high-speed connection.

Used to "work" with Kazaa and Audio Galaxy, but had some problems with nasty and annoying spy-ware .. i threw all the stuff away (snifff).... the highest down speed i could get was 13K (audio galaxy).

So, last week-end... I found Xolox... setup... no spyware indeed... yesssssss!!!!

But... there is a but!!! (i have also the "DU meter" , to check my internet traffic.

Although I don't mind to share files... i was quite surprised to see the traffic going on..
in less then 5 days i UPLOADED (not shared) a little more then l1GB... thats acting as a server!... little reminder : my laptop is only connected between 23H and 6.00 AM. thats an average of 3OK/sec !!! - and with DU-meter, i saw that there was a lot of traffic but not on my harddisk (download/share)

Okay.. i've got broadband and huge speed, i can still browse and so on while using Xolox.... but....

My ISP (the rules).... max 1,5 GB upload on a 30days base (10GB download) - "sliding window - 30 days/ calculation"... otherwise they cut me off.

Now i'm sitting here... with 1GB upload after 5 days... and I didn't share that much (I had only 1 file in my 'shared')...

Isn't there a way (later upgrade).. to switch off the 'server mode' but still sharing files?... or to set 'limitations' in 'server volume'?

This night, I 'uploaded' :344MB and i had no files in my 'share'.. i only got 1 download at 7am this morning (reached 40K/s)...

I think.... i'll wipe out Xolox... and install it again.. with 'no server' option.. or is there another way to switch off 'server mode'?

Thanks... greetings.... and KEEP ON SHARING!!!!

Lower the maximum upload bandwidth setting in preferences.

Unhappy

Thanks for,the tip.... i lowered the speed in 'preferences'...there was no significant change.... (this night i uploaded about 270MB, without sharing)

So i did the following... : uninstall xolox, saved my temps and shares.
re-install xolox as 'dial-up low speed".. there was also no change, more then 10KB/sec activity (no search, shares or download active) (i waited about 1 hour).... and i couldn't laugh!!!

I opened up zone-alarm and blocked the "server" property of Xolox.

restarted xolox...... and the activity dropped below 4KB/sec and i had a lot of 'alerts' in zone-alarm, COMING FROM IP and PORTS DIFFERENT OF PORT 6349 on my port 6349

Question : when using Xolox / gnutella network... does everybody (host / clients use port 6349 for up/download???

If so, i have to block al those IP cause they are spoofing, am i right?

As an example you'll find an excel-file with my up/download results (DU-meter) for the last days.

Thanks for responding

In tools > preferences > Uncheck option to set to 'Max' when idle 15 mins.

That is some *serious* bandwidth to be using.... even though XoloX doesn't use Ultrapeers( would make it much more effecient) Yet your DU meter may be way off ( unless the majority is all from files being uploaded).

On average I found it only uses .5KB/sec tops for normal gnutella traffic. *shrug*

Hi KayaMan,

thanks for your reply..

I already unchecked "max. when idle" from the beginning...

LOL... So yesterday.. i did the following (sorry)..

downloaded limewire.. installed it correctly... and checked the 'KB/sec use' for the hole afternoon and night ... the average traffic (without files uploading) was less then 1,5KB/sec.... thats a difference !!!!!!!

I stopped limewire... started Xolox... and the traffic went up to 10KB/sec again!!!! (and no activity on harddisk)

Have to say that there is no other application running, when i stop Xolox the traffic drops to 0KB/sec.

Xolox version : the last one from july (1.21) downloaded from Cnet
system :
Laptop Compaq armada m700, pentium III 650mhz, 320MB ram, Windows NT4 service pack 4 (administrator rights for this machine), Ethernet card 100+, Novell 5 TCP/IP (workstation alone, ISP connection from my home, not office).
Cable modem internet connection (broadband)

Little detail : at my ISP account, i can check my upload/download "consumption" on 24 hour base and those results are matching with the DU-meter readings and totals.

So... i like Xolox, the interface is very practical and easy to 'read' and the functionnalities are more than sufficient but.... This "traffic" is an issue, i would like some help / solution... please!!

Have a nice week.. thanks anyway

I run a small app that monitors net activity along with cpu/ram etc, and I did a small test today.

XoloX: Max upload is 1kb/s
NO uploads or downloads
Fresh install, newest version

Bandwidth consumption isn’t really constant, but it averages 3kb/s down, 4kb/s up..

I did several more tests.. Seems that 10kb/s for the max upstream or higher yielded the same results as far as network activity:

Results: 6kb/s down, 8kb/s up [average]

While this is inefficient when compared to any client currently supporting ultrapeers, it's perfectly acceptable for people on an unlimited bandwidth broadband connection. 56k users may feel the pinch of XoloX lagging the connection as long as they have it running, and anyone with harsh bandwidth limits will definitely notice..

My only hope is that ultrapeers will be implemented soon so this will no longer be an issue. Besides from this minor obstacle XoloX is an excellent program IMHO.

I agree with gamer in that ultrapeers need to be implemented in Xolox. The lack of ultrapeers leaves Xolox slightly behind in some cases.
