XoloX Nonsense Trouble, trouble. Downloaded 1.22 build 263, total waste of time and HDD space. Ripped it out, and replaced it with 1.22 build 272. No change. Endless fatal errors, no downloads, and literally millions of bytes, as in well over 12,000,000 (yep, that's Millions), downloaded and uploaded with no obvious destination on my machine, and no clue as to what was uploaded and where it went. Somebody successfully uploaded a file from me, which of course they are welcome to, but nothing but frustration , and, well, NOTHING for me. What's going on? I already know what's not going on, and that's Xolox!!!! |
That is caused by your computer forwarding network traffic (searches, results, ect.). Most people experiance about 5k/s, but it can bet much higher, especially when you are sending alot of stuff connecting to hosts. I am not supprized that you found a large number, because that can add up very quickly. |
Thanks for responding. I have a real-time internet monitor, and the download/upload speeds are in the 10.5 to 12.75 Kb/s range, which is much higher than usual. The issue here is that I'm not getting any results, ie, music. One item I'm trying for is the Beatles' Sgt Pepper's album, which has been locked in at 2% for four whole days now. Also I get errors that cause XoloX to terminate every time I try to use it, as well as a Runtime error on startup (syntax) each and every time I start up. Do you know if the folks who run XoloX are following the Microsoft Business Paradigm? That is to say they release something that sort of works, and relies on the general public to finish up their beta testing? It sure seems so. |
Some of those problems just have to do with other people's computers and stuff. My impression is that Xolox is a kinda a "work in progress". |
"....work in progress." That makes sense. Again, thank you for replying. I guess I'll just have to stick with it for awhile. I think I'll abort all my other searches for now, and just try for one thing at a time, and see how that goes (or doesn't). BTW, I just got an email from Audiogalaxy (with whom I was signed up with for a time); they're renaming themselves, I forget what just now, and giving away the first two weeks for free, $10 a month (I think) thereafter. |
Interesting bit of information. But if you look at the number of freeloaders you can really tell that most people do not feel that they have a moral obligation to give as well as take, so why would those people want to pay for acess to what they can get anyway. (unless they really like stuff that could only be found with a central server...) I have noticed some people will pay money instead of with ads... |
All too true... it is a theme since we humans started writing things down that there's always somebody trying to get over. I'm primarily trying to replace stuff I had as a kid on LP, so I truly believe I've already paid the royalty fees on the things I'm trying to get ahold of. Am I right about this, or am I justifying ripping off folks who were an integral part of my upbringing? As an example, in Beatleland, I bought Rubber Soul and Revolver each on LP, cassette and CD, so I feel that I paid the royalties three times, so trying to download Sgt Pepper's and Magical Mystery Tour (only LP and cassette), is not stealing from people who, although not technically 'friends' in the formal sense, were and are welcome guests in my home. I know we've drifted far afield, but it's an interesting point. |
I'm not really conserned about royalties. (What? You thing that those actresses won't starve anymore if they get more money?) I'm just annoyed with people who sit on the network, sapping it's resources, and do not give anything in return. This is getting off topic... mabye this thread could be moved to the rants forum... |
Way off topic!! I was getting really frustrated with the service, and you let me know that I wasn't a lost voice in the electronic wilderness, so thanks a bunch. I'll go back to making this work out, and let you get on to other things. Like, ciao for now.... |
