As I said earlier, there is a GREAT HACK for XOLOX out now

As I said earlier, I have made a great hack for xolox, much better than the lame firewall hack - called xolox_1.12_hacked_v1.zip or xolox_1.12_hacked_v1_patch.zip the reason why it is better is because it has no expiration, no splash/wait, and it will auto-update as intended if xolox ever re-continues it - also it will continue to receive news from xolox.nl... so why wait? go grab it now! it is on the gnutella network! except no imitations! Later on

How do you know this new "patch" is nor some backdoor to let people into your hard-drive without you knowing? A virus, or some other nasty could be easily wrtten in.. no?

Anyone have an answer for how to watch what is getting pulled, read, or otherwise off your HD?

i run these three programs in my personal opion this is the most effective starting with the top

1 Norton Anti Virus, with auto-detect enabled, and i checked the software that i am distributing.

2 Ad-aware. that i run every day to check for spy ware,

3 Tiny Personal firewall.

and i trust the source that i got in from, and i have been using this patch from the beginning and nothing is wrong with my computer. so you can trust me too.

Iamancho,
speaking technical nothing from 1-3 will protect you about a backdoor, at least not until it was found (we can discuss every point more detailed if you want). So it's just a matter of trust....

If you need a 100% clean version, take the old original Xolox 1.12, install and then patch it yourself as Pataya described:

None of those items will do any good

If someone has written in a "security hole" none of the items mentioned above will track or detect it. Granted, a *known* virus will get detected. A firewall will track traffic from xolox.. but who can tell what that traffic is reading.. or copying, or scanning.

It's probably just me being paranoid... but when my HD starts to click.. and I'm not running anything to read it (other than xolox), I always wonder.

How hard would it be to put in a back-door for a malicious user? My guess is that it would not be a radical change to allow this sort of thing.

"It's not paranoia.. if they're really after you."

yeah, i knew that it wasnt 100% fool proof, but it made me feel better. so it didnt bother me to use it. and i would have gotten rid of it if it screwed with my computer. and i need to reformat and start over anyway.... thanks moak

No Backdoor

Believe me, there's no backdoor in my release.
I also checked the original 1.13 source and found nothing of interest.

Anything new worth mentioning in the 1.13 unofficial version?

Unregistered December 10th, 2001 06:46 PM

well there seems to be 2 xolox113.zip files going around one is a cracked v1.12 exe file that you must copy over your working xolox.exe, and the other one http://all2all.virtualave.net/p2p/xolox113us.zip is the full installer. it shows as v1.13 on the splash screen, GUI and about menu. and at least on my computer, seems to use less memory. DON?

as a pger, i know the tedious task that was involved here... they wanted it to work, to make a backdoor would be adding functionality which would require source... i imagine they just removed the limitations of the last xolox update... however, you are right in your assumption, it is of course possible, but IMHO improbable. peace.

Memory.. No, but less CPU because I NOPped a timer.
(they used different timers for their checks).

1. theres no backdoor!!! but u don't need the source !
Somebody could use a binder to put malicious code to the file or use the net for download it. Just 5 lines of code and the exe size would'nt change.
