Default SwapNut is a good applications

All I see in here are those that bash the program, but myself and friends like it. I noticed at their site they have a notice about the emailer script they have on there and even a program to uninstall it for those that may have selected Yes and have a problem for some reason.

With the negative going on, thought I would post something positive about this good product. One thing I really like which I haven't found in other apps is the ability to almost always be able to download the file I want from other SwapNut users. Not sure why this is exactly, but 4 out of 5 times, the file starts downloading right away. I am lucky to get half the files from the other apps I have tried.

SwapNut is really just LimeWire's code - it hasn't got any magical features to make it download more often (unless they've done something *really* slimy like blocking non-swapnut peers from downloading).

Go get LimeWire instead - reliable code from trustworthy people.

Last poster is only partly correct. It is based off the LimeWire code, but SwapNut is a "forced sharing" network, so all SwapNut users must share their files. This is probably what the previous poster was talking about when he/she said that they almost always got the files they wanted from SwapNut. Also, Swapnut shows it's users files first, again increasing the chances since you usually pick from the top choices when there are duplicate listings.

With LimeWire, you can choose not to share anything or set upload connections to 0.

I had to voice my opinion with all you bashers out there. It is LimeWire to an extent, but they have made it very much better at getting your files when you are downloading from other SwapNut users. Don't believe me, go try it.

I can see how this increases availability, but shouldn't those same files be available to *any* peer? I've had SwapNut users download from me, and I really hope they aren't just leaching from the g-net without giving anything back.

Funny, I wonder how they reconcile "forced sharing" with their "don't share any copyrighted material" claim on the web page? Everyone (quite legally) probably has copyrighted works on their PC of some type, by sharing them by default (perhaps without newbies even being aware) aren't they actually encouraging violations? This was one of the arguments against Napster and it seems like a good grounds for a lawsuit.

I just ran a test with SwapNut. By default, searches only show SwapNut results, which means as a SwapNut user, you are going to be downloading from other SwapNut users and not from other applications. So this would be the complete opposite of what you were mentioning, SRL. However, other clients can connect to SwapNut users and download from them. So in fact, it looks like SwapNut is actually doing a great service to the Gnutella network, regardless of how much you hate them (been reading your posts in here.)

Now if BearShare would do the same, we would be styling! BearShare, PLEASE make it so that your software minimizes on closing and stays connected like SwapNut.

That's not bad if that's the case - at least that sets one of my concerns to rest. Still, I'm guessing there must be some option to download from other peers because I've had several SwapNut users download from me.

To tell you the truth I tried it for a bit then uninstalled. It didn't seem to work any better or worse than LimeWire, and I didn't like that it asked for my name and email without any sort of privacy statement.

What has caused me to protest so loudly is the email issue (which is an entirely different matter). I don't like spam or spammers one bit, and it makes me very suspect of their motives. Even if it gets user consent, many were not catching this, and several people are reporting it sending repeated messages - not just one to each address. Also at least one user said it sent the emails even though they didn't select the option.

I didn't select the option myself, but I use Eudora so who knows - maybe that's what saved me. I suspect maybe their marketing gimmick had a few bugs, but even so it's a *really* bad idea in the first place. Remember awhile back Microsoft got slammed for doing this very thing with one of their outlook upgrades (and that didn't send multiple emails). Companies should know better if they want the trust of their users. Especially considering there's so many good peers to choose from free of the marketing hype.
