Joe Busuttil has a spectacular aura about
Default Desktop icons

When trying to copy an icon from one app (in my apps list) to the desktop,
I get a drop-down-menu saying OPEN FILE LOCATION. What is the next step plse?

And why does this wording Open File Location not appear for some other apps?

I am baffled!

Kindly help.

Joe

It appears the apps listed in Win 8's 'Start' are themselves shortcuts or links to the Start Menu shortcuts. Open File Location opens the Start Menu > Programs > app folder which of course are all shortcuts.

So right-click the app listed, then use the Open File Location, right-click the shortcut you find and choose Send To ... Desktop (create shortcut).

The only items I did not find an Open File Location for were things like Music, Weather, Games, Video, Photos, Maps.

Windows 8 is not my usual OS, so I am not wise about it.

My thks to Lord of the Rings for his helpful and prompt reply to my query about desktop icons from icons on my apps list.
His method worked well.
As he suggested, it does not work for all apps, but I did manage for one particular app.
Sorry I did not reply earlier, as I am a slowcoach at age 77....

If it is not working for all apps you wish to have a desktop shortcut for, then go to the application folders to find the application itself and create a desktop shortcut, again using the 'Send To' process. Keep in mind there are two app folders, one for older 32-bit apps.

In any folder you open on the desktop, there will be a column down the left-side listing places you can go. Desktop, Recent Places, Libraries, Homegroup, etc.
Select Home tab, then Computer > Local Disk (C:)
This will show your app folders to the right-side.

Personally I made a desktop shortcut for Program Files (x86), but that's for personal use of dealing with older apps. (Some older apps had their settings stored within the program's folder.)

I've got the same problem so what I did, I opened the file location then right click through it to create a desktop icon, sometimes this option is not available so I am just moving the icon from the folder to my desktop,
