To change the black background color on your Windows 10 PC:

Right-click on the desktop, select "Personalize",

Then navigate to "Background" and choose "Solid color"

From there, select the color you want by clicking on the color palette.

Many thks for your reply, but unfortunately the recommended method did not work, as the black background colour stubbornly refuses to leave the screen.

Right click on your Desktop > Click on "Personalize" > click on "Background"

The next page will say "Personalize your background"

To the right of that will be a drop-down menu, click on it and select "Solid Color"(you could also select "Picture" and add a picture for your background)

Then select the background color you would like to use and that should do it.

Then close out the settings page and the desktop should be the color you selected.

Renewed thanks for elaborating on your first reply.
I have tried the second method you suggest, but my problem is not solved: the desktop remains blank.
I went to my external Hard Drive and tried to shift the icons from there to the desktop, but every icon stood on the desktop for barely two seconds before it vanished again..
Could the solution, perhaps, be a reduction of the resolution? But how to do it?
Grateful for your patience.

Is your Desktop locked? To double-check if the icons are not there, open the actual folder Desktop. Can be accessed via the Quick Access drop-down menu you see on the left-side when you open any folder.

When you try to change the Desktop background do you see the following message in Settings?
