![]() I am running win98se. windows media player 9 real player 10 I have downloaded quite a few .avi's but windows media player cannot open them, claiming "class not registered". under the 'web help' tab i get linked to a microsoft page that is no longer maintained. great. i searched some forums, but none are very explicit on what seems to be the cause of this error message. some suggest it is "codecs", but does win media player not automatically download the codec? (this is what i told it to do under 'options'). others suggest that the avi file can be registered manually under the start/run function with the regsvr32 + filename command. this did not work for me. please, someone, advise me on the solution, or where to look. best, ssiemson71 |

![]() thank you Morgwen. what do you mean by "download the codecs pacs (<- what are pacs?) the links you will find here in this section." are 'pacs' = packets? i understand that users are usually advised against installing bundled codecs re: system failure et al. why does microsoft not make the codecs available? is divx 5 the codec most likely missing? is there spy-ware related drama with their free download? thanks for replying, best ssiemson71 |

![]() thanx again. i installed the divX5 bundle free of charge via this website www.xvidmovies.com and now the .avi files play ok. i also ran ad aware a number of times, and hijack this as well, just to make sure that no spyware arrived in the bundle. it all appears clean as far as i can tell from the log. browsing all sorts of help pages + forums this afternoon i really did read, a number of times, of the divx codec being bundled with spyware. whether there is any truth to that matter or not... best s |
