new user - be kind and use 'easy'language!

Hi
brand new user here - dont really know much.
first question ( of probably many!) when I find something I want to download eg a movie - what is the difference between the 'types' eg movie, avi mpeg........what would be best for me to download? I am using a mac 0sX

Is it posible to burn a downlaoded film to dvd and play it on the television?

sorry if these are very naive questions :)

Hi...

First, click on this link...

http://www.gnutellaforums.com/forumd...?s=&forumid=81

Read and read and read the stuff in the Tips & Tricks Forum-
There should be a lot of info for you there...

And, most films that you can download are approximately 650MB to 700MB...

Be very, very cautious about downloading AND opening files which have the right name but are obviously the wrong size...

Have fun and keep asking questions...

;)

If you're using OSX, then it's wise to have a decent burner app. ie: Roxio Toast. Toast 6 in particular has had xtra movie functions added such as for CD/DVD menus & conversion. I won't stop your fun for searching & finding the best video formats to dwnld for mac. However if you have Toast & read the manual it will tell you anyway (basically almost anything that can be recognised by QT.) That's enough hints. lol ;)

I'm from the middle of the ocean (sea monster 'Ness') lol :D :D ;) As recommended by Ursula, a decent movie should be 500 MB minimum. The larger the better! Most have been downsized so they'll fit onto a CD to burn as a VCD/SVCD. But some are broken into parts so you'll have part 1, 2, etc. These would obviously offer the best quality & could each be added to Toast as tracks. With Toast 6 you can add chapter markers & even edit parts.

One problem with dwnlding movies using LW is that most have been reduced in size. The originals will range in size b/w 4-7 GB. So if it's been reduced to 1/8 or 1/10th of the size there's obviously going to be some noticeable loss of quality. Also some formats such as mpeg1 generally have a set dimension/resolution which is roughly half that of dvd. That's one reason the size you see appears to be relatively small. The other is the playback app & most video apps have an option to watch full screen. DVD for PAL is 720x576/486 (NTSC) for standard video (not incl. widescreen.) SVCD is 480x480 & VCD is 352x280. There's other sizes b/w those you can get particularly with mpeg4/divX, etc.

Oh & once you've dropped the video into Toast, press edit & press the Text tab. This should tell you the dimensions of the video. Yes you should be able to burn to DVD. Toast will do any necessary converting. If you have a dvd-rw burner, trial a rw disk out 1st!

Another point I should make is that just b/c the video's been reduced in size doesn't mean it's not reasonable quality. One of the factors is the quality of the utilty that reduced the size & also the skills of the user. Some vcd/svcds are very good. You said easy to understand explanation, sorry I forgot! :)

Just on a tiny pedantic note here---

It is not only LimeWire or any other specific p2pclient where you will find movie files of a reduced quality... It is the nature of the compression system that many people use that results in the lower quality... (Same is true for music files !)

Peerless, another really savage moderator here, might also be prompted to suggest that there are possibly many LimeWire users who are unfortunately blind---
He thinks this because of the crazy numbers of posts from LimeWire users here in the BearShare forums !!!
