Problem Previewing AVI files I have noticed while trying to download avi files that usually the preview won't work while they are still downloading. I can't tell if this only happens on files that end up not working or if it's just random, does any one know? It would be nice if it was consistant enough to be able to tell, because after downloading a 700MB file and finding it doesn't work, well that's a little discouraging. Anyone have any methods for detecting bad files while downloading them? Last edited by zetch1411; November 24th, 2004 at 10:07 AM. |

I'm new to this forum, and forums in general. Not too familiar with the etiqutte. I just am having a hard time finding my old posts to add anything to them. Took me a little while to even find this one again. I'm not really liking the fact that people seem to be getting their hands smacked by the "teacher" for screwing up. Shouldn't forums be equal for every user? I just like the thought of being able to ask a stupid question and letting other users who have had the same problem comment on it and hopefully answer it. Not really even interested in the beuracracy. |

Well, in defense of the "teachers", we do not (generally) "smack your hands" for asking a stupid question. We "smack" them if you ask a question that goes against the rules. And that's different. (by the by, the rules are available as an announcement if you wanna get familiar with the etiquette). In a utopia, forums would be equal for everyone and there would be no need for advantages and/or somebody playing "police". The thing is that the world ain't perfect (it's the latest theory...) so members have more privileges than guests and moderators have some more functions that members (administrator(s) are Forum Gods so we don't talk about them much). What I'm desperately trying to say is that if there wasn't someone here to play the part of the "teacher", chaos would surely be unleashed upon GnutellaForums.com: guests posting all kinds of spam, flame-wars and other annoying stuff that can be witnessed in some other forums (mainly because they have section for it too). We're more like Santa (hmm, maybe not): we know if you've been bad or good. (So be good for goodness' sake!) Returning to the problem posted in the title post, are you sure that you have the right codecs? Generally, you can view (almost) anything with the necessary codecs, so even if a movie won' t preview (which it should, methinks), make sure that you have the right codecs to play it; the completed file should play. You can download the nimo pack that contains most codecs for Windows Media Player for PC, but I suggest you just switch players to the free and less dangerous VLC (www.videolan.org/vlc/): it doesn't need any additional codecs and can play virtually anything. I hope I answered to a few of your questions. Class dismissed.

I wrote that last post mainly for ursula, who instead of posting a reply to my post, edited my post to include a mocking footnote. I understand the need for protection against spamming but that wasn't the issue I had in mind. Provided that no spamming or other intentionally annoying material is being posted, shouldn't people be free to post what they would like to without being mocked? And btw, the posts were not the same. A problem previewing avi files and a problem deleting them are two different issues, and I would assume, generally once a question has been successfully answered and a thank you has been posted, the topic is pretty much dead. I had no intention of trying to spread numerous annoying posts about avi files, it's just that I had two seperate problems with them, one which has been solved and one that has not. Back to this topic, I have tried downloading several different players and tons of codec bundles. The files play fione once downloaded, so there is no problem there. I kind of just assumed from this that the file is being downloaded without all the neccesary info required to play it having been downloaded first. It's not that big of a deal, I can manage without being able to preview these files and will not post anymore questions reagrding avi files. |

Biting The Hand That... Dept. I'll be damned if I can find the [Edit] you refer to surviving in any of your posts ! Perhaps you have subsequently edited it yourself ? However, one does hope that you will find the capacity to acknowledge that in fact I have fairly routinely responded to your posts rather quickly. (With minimum 'mock mode' engaged !) Try to understand that there are many people who post the same or nearly the same posts here out of the usually declared desperation to receive a reply as soon as possible... Problem is that it makes a mess of the place when such double-posts are allowed to remain. Anyone with your obvious general computer abilities should be able to appreciate this, hmmm ? I, along with a few others here, suffer from the delusion that p2p filesharing is a hobby and should be fun... Wild thinking, huh ? Guess my amazingly developed and highly desirable sense of humour just isn't reaching the universal market ! "Be seeing you..." As Number 6 used to say...
