A CD-ROM emulator will do almost the same thing as Mame, except that it will do it for CDs.
Allow me to explain: Say you have a game on CD-ROM that requires you to insert the CD-ROM every time you want to play. What the program the mag offered does is emulate the CD-ROM. In other words, it stores the data of the CD-ROM on your comp and then tricks the comp into thinking that the CD-ROM is already inserted.
Neat?
It depends.
As for Mame, what it does is it emulates old consoles like the Super Nintendo Entertainement System (or SNES ) and old arcades. You then have to find ROMs on the net to play games, so to play the game your B/F wants, you first have to dld Mame then find and dld the ROM.
