i have to know what codec i need !!!

can somebody please telll me how to work out what codecs are needed, and where you can find them, i am having trouble playing avi files, and does anybody know where to get some completely free software to convert avi to dvd files, so i can burn them onto dvd for her indoors { you have to keep them happy }
