Question File Formats

New to this, and too old to figure it out. If I want to download a movie, which file format do I use? I've tried mov, but it didn't finish. It went to 51%. Then I tried to view what I had and it played a bit then made some horrific noise and caused an error.
I would like to be able to burn this movie for private use after I download it, so I assumed the mov was the proper format. Is there another I can use to reach my goal?

Don't know what operating system or burning software your using, but I have had reasonable success with .avi and .mpg formats.

you can do a search (upper right between f.a.q. and home) for - burning DVDs. You will find some useful information on this subject.

The operating system is windows xp home version. The burning part I haven't even attempted yet. I guess it's built into the operating system.. God, I feel so dumb!! Do you get the whole movie from avi and does it burn to a dvd disk and play on a dvd player?? I really appreciate any help you can offer with this. I thought I was computer literate until I attempted this movie thing.

AVI & MPG/MPEG are generally the best to aim for. The larger the better (ie: cd size of around 600-700 MB).

Get a back up player just in case try VLC which is free & has inbuilt codecs: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ (choose nearest mirror site)

Thank you, my Lord. I now understand a little more about file size. I am making another attempt using avi and mpg. I have downloaded the videolan and at some point and time I may have to "speak" with you again about what in the name of my goddess it's all about!! Hope you don't mind if we touch base again.
Blessings~AM
